Yeah I sort of thought that before I split the case but a cam was on my mind anyway

Next job is to clean the case before I do anything else & check it for cracks, save spending money on something that's going nowhere fast!

While Im at it I'll see what the bearing sizes are at the moment & make a note of them!

    Conrods looked good though

  3. Those 66mm stroke cranks are generally quite worn anyway... I've got around 6 of them sat on the shelf, and they are all around 0.1mm outside of the wear tolerance

  4. What's the pin play like in the little ends?

Don't tell me that   I don't think its too badly worn (he wishes/hopes) as I cant feel any ridges even though the bearing journals show wear, that doesn't mean anything though!!

Before I removed them, they felt good, they slid with slid with resistance but not that tight they needed severe force to remove them. No lateral (?) wear to them, my Dad also checked the play & he said they felt right

  7. Sound spot on!!

Don't stress on the crank, easy enough to get reground... The guy I use will pretty much do it same day for me!!

If your crank is fooked I may have a better one sat here. What stroke are you after?

Im gonna stick with 66mm Oscar - I think it looks worse than it is, I'll clean it up next week & check its dimensions - its just had a bit of water between bearing & crank journals, its not got any surface pitting to it! I'll report back later next week :)

  11. When i took my case in to Stateside Jim checked the case for wear by putting a new std bearing into a half at the flywheel end and checking for play, my case needed to be line bored :(

you need to have a word in there ear

  15. If someone could answer this question it might help other TLBers in the future when they come to build a Type 4.

Right, Paul, Joker .... anyone ..... I have a lovely original 1.8 head that I want to use but it is the type with 'air injectors', problem is I don't have them so how the F do I blank them off?? For the uninitiated, to improve emissions, some injected motors actually used an additional port alongside the main inlet ports that injected directly behind the intake valve.... I don't know if it was an early attempt at EGR or if it was actually inducting clean air.

    Answers on a postcard please.

Mork ... time for a cam upgrade??

  17. I think VWH may sell the blanks you need

  18. Use a 10mm tappet ;)

And they are "air injection ports". I've now got a set of 1700 heads with them in o_O which is odd as I thought that they were an 1800 only thing... you live and learn

  19. What's a 10mm tappet look like. Pic please Paul.
