Historic tax

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by paradox, Feb 13, 2024.

  1. Thanks for confirming

  2. As I recall, I did get a partial refund on road tax, after buying 6 months worth then registering as historic. Depends on timing, I think.

As they don’t automatically register vehicles as historic, I’m not convinced anyone’s bus has ever automatically been registered as historic.

  4. Was it a partial refund or a full refund?

The difference is that they lose a revenue stream , it’s the owners responsibility to claim the exemption from paying

    Partial. For any complete months.

The PO should send your V5 off, but as others has stated, it depends on which one you go to. Some have no clue.

IIRC I managed to get mine taxed and not pay. It wouldn’t have had tax as I used to do 6 months and then sorn it.

Either way you have to send off your V5

Isn’t this all a bit premature??

  7. I was asking cunny if he got a partial refund
If you read my original post I say my reason for doing this.

Cunny did not send of his v5.

Everyone is telling you, except one person (and are talking from experience) to send off your V5, whether that is via PO or direct is up to you.

You’re worried about the historic tax being taken away, yet, there won’t be a new gov’t for at least 6 months.

If you knew anything about history, labour never took it away, it just froze the status quo, so no new vehicles could join historic status.

Do whatever you like, it’ll make no difference. You’ll still get historic tax one day and you won’t get a full refund on the tax you’ve already paid.

  9. I do and I will :hattip:

  10. I can't remember exactly how much was refunded - just remember paying the tax when I bought my bus in 2014 as I needed to drive it straight away - the V5 then came back with historic on it and the payment was refunded. The only thing different for me was that I had just bought the bus so the V5 was being changed as well.

I don’t pay tax on mine and have never registered it as Historic. I may have had to phone DVLA to tell them it’s age.

  13. Didn’t you end up with the post office registering it as disabled vehicle at one point or was that a different van?

I think we’ve all had a bit of a wake up call with regards to the Post Office and its reputation along with its ability to run things seamlessly and without issues. So there may very well be a fantastic response at one post office and perhaps a meagre or limited response from another Post Office . Sounds like you may have a more congenial response if you by pass them altogether.

Separately,,, with regards to insurance . I had an issue about two years ago where my car had rolled into someone else’s car in a well known supermarket car park. To this day, no one knows if someone had tried to steal my car or just broke into it to search or what has happened or possibly I didn’t put the handbrake on . Anyway long story short, my car wasn’t insured at the time because for the last three years my insurance documents had the last three letters around the wrong way, mine is HTF but on my insurance they had HFT. This in effect meant that I’d been insuring someone’s golf for the last two or three years and my car was not insured,,,,, but had still been taxed. If the insurance had been a requirement, the error would have come to light much earlier. So I’d been insuring my car and taxing it but I wasn’t actually insured. This instigated a long and drawn out affair of possibilities including prosecution that went on for over two years and was I ever glad to get a short letter saying that they had indeed finally given up the ghost on trying to shove me into a court. Of course it was obviously not the insurers fault,,,,,couldn’t be could it

Ozziedog ,,,,,,,,,,,right letters, but wrong order :)

At a rough guess the PO did it when he sold it.
Again, they don’t automatically register vehicles as historic.

  16. It wouldn’t make sense for the DVLA to automatically send you a new V5 before having received your old V5, because you would then be in possession of two different V5s for the same vehicle.

yes!!! I’d forgotten about that :). The initial tax free time the post office lady didn’t know how to do it properly so put it as disabled for free

  18. So how did that get resolved?

  20. Sense or not - that's what happened - the previous owner will have sent the old one in - it was change of owner remember.
