Pah - not one mention of Nik Kershaw! ;)

Real education this thread - googled Randy Rhoads (I thought he was a wrester!) and what a sad ending, he sounded cool.

Growing up, the Don's were Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young, Mark Knopfler, Gary Moore, Slash and my favourite Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Nowadays, I can't get past how much I love the Manics - not big on solos - but the guitars in their music always work (can't find a better word).

But thank you chaps and chapesses, this thread has been an education!

Added - this is from Rolling Stone - about Kirk Hammett:
On any given night, at least half the parking lots in America have a car with the windows down, the speakers cranked and a couple of dudes sitting on the trunk playing air guitar to Kirk Hammett solos. Hammett is so steeped in metal history that he reportedly paid for his first guitar at fifteen with ten dollars and a copy of Kiss' Dressed to Kill. Metallica's dense thrash redefined hard rock more completely than any band since Led Zeppelin. Hammett's lead guitar is the emotional heart of the music, from acoustic angst ("Fade to Black") to badass flailing ("Master of Puppets"), and, in "One," the sound of a guitar tapping out a cry for help in Morse code, over and over, until the parking lot closes down.

You, like me now have to get on your tube to listen!!

  4. Best Thread Ever!!!! ;D

And since some of you have already nominated Angus Young I will go with pretty much anything by Slash - if I have to pick an album it's got to be a toss-up between Paradise City and Sweet Child of Mine

His guitar solos give me chills & I've been lucky enough to see him with VR twice & once his own at Glastonbury

If it wasn't 10am on a Friday & I wasn't at work I would be severely tempted to have a shot of Jack in his honour

  5. Ooops, didn't look above when i hit the post button :)

  6. Guns N' Roses - Coma (Live Chicago 1992)

Check out Slash solo and all round playing the way through this track. This track came about off the back of Slash's guitar work. They used to call the track, Slash's beast.

Anything by Slash has the thumbs up from me. Greatest guitar player of my generation.

  7. i have always rather loved the solo in oasis - live forever ....

    Live Forever

  8. Comfortably Numb
