Not for any stupid reasons like having kids, we just want more space without having to take an awning.

We're in a tight spot because we can't really sell the van to buy one with a pop top because of sentimental reasons.

I've been giving some thought to cutting the tin top and installing a Westy or Dormobile.

    What do you think?

    Daft to cut it imo.
Personally I'd sell the tintop and buy a poptop but then I dont get sentimental about buses!

or retro fit a TARDIS unit so its bigger on the inside than the outside ;D ..........you can then also travel back in time to stock up on NOS parts and you wont have to reach 88.8mph to do it ^-^

I'd not butcher a good tintop personally, how many great unmolested ones are remaining?

What about a westy, plenty of room in there

same as Baysearcher says, buy another bus

  9. I think you should do whatever you like to it that will mean you will use and enjoy it even more.

If leaving it with a tintop means it isnt as comfortable and therefore not as enjoyable then if you had the extra space then I think you should get chopping.

If you havent tried a poptop before it might be worth hiring one for a weekend to see how you get on before slicing and dicing yours.

We have a poptop which didnt work the first couple of outings but having now used it I dont think I could enjoy a tintop as much

  11. My bus started out as an unmolested Westy Continental. Over the years it became less and less practical for our needs First the roof went in favour of a viking, then the interior went as it took too much living space and was replaced with something more practical, then the bulkheads went to fit swivels.

Were it me and I just wanted more space to stand in the perhapt a westy turret top or a front hinged westy. If I wanted more room for luggage etc when camped and the option of a roof bed then a rear hinged westy perhaps. I do love dormys but practically and for ease of fitment youve got to look at a new westy style roof as these seem easier to operate look right on the van and its a turnkey job if you go to O'connels or I believe Down-under do them.

A tintop is a van with furniature and windows. If you cant stand up in it it isnt a camper really (ducks for cover) ;)

  12. Karlito added a westy pop top to his amazing van .... looks good!

  13. Don't cut a hole in the roof.

Take less stuff or take smaller stuff.

Sorted, thank you, that will be a pound.

My old early was a tintop and I kept thinking about cutting it and adding a roof but everybody gasped at the thought so i did'nt do it I did have a constant bump on my head though ??? Westys devintely made the best quality interiors but there roofs just dont do it for me, their not cool and have that boat on top look >:D

  15. Queue debate on which is the best looking roof! (other than a tintop). Theres always the sunroof and pop up tent approach!
