That is so true!! When I next hit the track, I want to be able to do 15s... changing the box is a big step in achieving this, but I'll be reworking my heads, and possibly look at adding some nitrous or a turbo
I'm the one in the wrong, I'm sorry. I've never actually build an engine, I'll watch this thread and learn a few things. If and when I do build one I'd go VW, if only to save getting wet feet!
I have, but just a simple standard 1600 for a whole one where I learnt that cleanliness is god. Not a chance I can do that in a workshop full of slightly magnetic ground steel filings so I limit it to fairly minor stuff and do it in the paint booth in another building. But like a lot of peopleI'd like to build one whopper and got a large chunk of a T4 as a base sitting in the workshop. I tipped a box of assorted nuts and bolts into the oil breather hole so it'll have to come apart. It's a 1700 with knacked heads so a bit limited and it just sits there.
There is also this perfectly sensible viewpoint, but I don't think I'd want to try steering such a beast of a T2 in a straight line!
@Moons, rules as follows. The difference between the 2 is that BWA insist on an air cooled flat flour engine whereas USB will allow transplants. Both are looking for a sub 18 second quarter as timed on the strip, so you've got a reaction time in there as well. http://www.ultimatestreetbays.co.uk/rules.html http://www.buseswithattitude.co.uk/index.php/bwa_rules As others have said, it's not just about winning, it's about making something as unlikely as a van go fast, especially if you do it with the original motor layout. I hope to see what kind of time I can do at some point and am also likely to mod it further in the future. Might even give the van a run around Blyton on a track day my mate runs, if they'll let me on!
True. Anyone want to buy a 1700 with knackered heads? (cracked with receding valve seats so not any use for repair). It was running just fine apart from the valve seats, but opportunity of a rebuilt 2L came in at barely more than a pair of heads at the time believe it or not so there it sits. Assorted nuts and bolts (inside the case) come free but you'd want to strip it anyway. It's a genuine engine from a bus, not a pile of completely knacked out poo as far as I can tell and from it's history. No ancilliares or tin or even flywheel. First £100 takes it.
BWA are split screens only Owen, they daren't let us guys in, they fear we will show them up with our bays
A bit off topic, Peugeot RCZ Sport thing has 260bhp plus from a 1.6....that's immense power on street fuel and mass produced engine. What sort of power would a normally aspirated air cooled engine make, that would be deemed good? Seem to recall anything over 100bhp per litre normally aspirated is immense.
