  1. To be fair it's been a great engine for the 3 years I have had it.

Before then it must of been in the van 5 years.

It's done well, just needs a refresh.

My Westy had one of his 1700's fitted when I bought it and I drove it into the ground. It had already pottered around for many years, I knew the previous owner, I put on about 30,000 miles never checking points, timing or valve gaps, changed the oil now and again and the oil filter twice. I had the carbs refurbished early on and it went like a rocket, I cruised non stop at 70mph for a full tankful once. It dropped a valve seat in the end, I could have put a new head on but found a whole engine for less money.

  4. Adding some pics there is no rocking when put face to face, they seem flat.

New ones are convex, they wear flat and then they’re worn out - but those look okay and the cam doesn’t look bad either.

  6. Cheers dude.

Looks like I should be ok with a clean up and re-ring.

  7. Started to clean up one of the heads, valves removed.

With my limited knowledge they are still in decent condition. [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

  8. I'm watching this one as I'll be pulling my type 4 engine out for a refresh as soon as the T4 is running:thumbsup:

  9. Just an observation have you made a note of which follower came from where? Not a good idea to mix them up. Unless you intend fitting a new cam & followers that is.

  10. Sure have, everything numbered and documented

  12. I noticed two of these rubber o rings under both exhaust followers over the brass guide.

I assume the are worth replacing but anyone know the purpose of them.

It was only the exhaust valves. [IMG]

  13. Most dont bother with those valve seals.. not even VW.. heads are looking good. Do the stems wiggle in the guides at all?

  14. Nothing at all from cylinder 3, only one I have tested so far to be honest.

Normally those valve stem seals go hard, break up and drop into the sump. Then peeps post a pic of the oil they’ve just drained and ask what the curved bits of plastic are. Don’t bother to replace them, they don’t do anything and as Deefer66 says VW deleted them.

I doubt if those AMC heads are very old, they look in good condition and the valves look okay. Although it’s usually recommended to renew at least the exhaust valves I’d reuse those. But don’t blame me if one breaks five minutes after you’ve started the engine.

  16. Any tips on where to buy dude a new set? If it's good practice to replace them.

Measure the valve head diameter, the usual parts suppliers should have them. But I’d reuse them, they don’t look old or damaged and for the valve stem seals to still be intact they haven’t got hot.

  18. Coolairvw normally have them at about the going rate and you can get Latebay discount if you let them know your name on here... but they didn't look too bad. Trying to think what cleaned mine up best ...might have been citric acid

  19. Good news on guides so far ...

If yoy want shiney clean and have a compressor.. glass bead does a reasonable and gentle job..

  20. Slow progress but got one head done.

Re lapped the valves and cleaned up.

Might start on 3/4 piston and barrels tomorrow so I don't out anything back on the wrong side [IMG][IMG][IMG]
