Type 4 1800 (refresh) advice required.

  1. Finally all my parts arrived.

im in two minds while its out if i should re-ring it.

I have some gunk engine degreaser to clean up the oil drips.

I can see a decent amount of carbon build up on the valve head looking down the intake's, would GUNK be suitable any advice on ways to clean the heads up or am i best leaving them be.

I wouldn't try and clean the valves in situ but carbon on the back of the valve is bound to effect flow to some extent. Have you got a valve spring compressor?

  3. No but I can get one, it's bit of a unknown task to me so not sure how far to take it.

Nothing majorly untoward at a glance apart from one hot/one cold exhaust valves.

Can you get a piston to TDC and photo and/or measure the distance to top of barrel? They say bolt it down, but don't bother if if stays put anyway or you can hold it, for now...

  6. Initial glance is basically flush. I don't have anything to measure that accurately currently. [IMG]

    What parts have you received?

With such low compression I’d deglaze the bores and re-ring the pistons. And remove the valves, clean all the carbon off them and the combustion chambers and lap in the valves. I’d also lap the cylinders to the heads, although I know some don’t agree. Make sure there are no head gaskets fitted.

Do you have, or can you borrow, feeler gauges and a steel rule or straight edge to measure how far down the cylinders the pistons are?

  8. Might a s well change the rings anyway.. dont forget to allow for the AMC step in the head that replaced the gasket VW originally used

    I didn't expect that!
For the sake of discussion, let's say the step in the head is 1mm and the piston is 0.25-0.5mm from the top. The combustion chamber haven't been enlarged.

It should work as is so ... this:

I would also inspect the end of the exhaust valve stems. If they are worn replace the valves. A lot of folk would replace the exhaust valves as a matter of course and so would I unless they looked perfect.

  10. When cylinder 3 is at bottom it's 66mm from top of barrel.

    What didn’t you expect? :)

It should work yes, but I don’t know if AMC heads have the same combustion chamber volume as VW heads. And I don’t know if those dished pistons are the same as VW dished pistons. We know the engine has low compression and poor performance but we don’t know why.

  14. Regarding my comment on low performance.

This is based off driving to shows with 3 other bays. 1 was a 2L type 4 stock carbs, and two 1641 type 1 motor bays. I just couldn't keep up.

But that was when I had a progressive Webber installed.

So the low performance i would take with a pinch of salt.

It also might be my driving style

66mm is the stroke. I meant the distance between the top of the piston and the top of the cylinder with the piston at TDC – it looks about 1mm, but about is not accurate enough.

What are the cam followers like? When you put them face to face they should rock slightly – make sure you know which hole each follower came from so you can put them back in the same place.

So little deck, I thought I'd spied a spacer under the barrels.

I thought I'd just mention that I think The Engine Shop are often unfairly judged against more expensive competitors. They are at the cheap end of the spectrum, but he does care about his reputation and I believe within the confines of his pricing builds honest engines to the correct tolerances. I know Laurie P used to say his machining was top notch. Definitely several steps above Elite VW for instance. But of course he will machine rather than replace anything he can.
