  1. I'd go with a bit of aluminium and some heat absorbent material

Heat shield on a 1600?? I've never seen them fitted to the T1 engine (bus and beetle) I've never seen any holes etc to fit them in place on the T1 engine.

  8. but its the exhaust that gets hot , ive found them for 1700 no picture fitted mind , so does a 1700 exhaust get hotter just asking , 400 , 500 , 600 or more deg c ?

My bus has the holes and even had a sad little bit of metal still attached to the rear tinware on one side by a screw.
It is only any use with a stock exhaust. I suspect the heat shield definitely went when the EMPI rustpack header was installed in 2005 or so. About 5 owners back.
The 4 into 1 JK stainless header I have fitted comes within 5mm or so of the tin so there is no space for a heat shield. The tin just gets quite hot.
I dont think I would rate the chances of fibreglass 'tinware' surviving either next to that header.

:)Drive fast and the hot air never gets a chance. ..

  10. My dads old van never had one from new ???

  11. fraid mine is std mike n although will go fast ish ;) it would most likely cook it , its since ive fitted an aftermarket std exhaust tins been getting very hot all joints etc tight , the old one prob built thicker and better and being on their over twenty years had more heat soaking ability :D, was just thinking id heard about vw putting something their , the old why would they put one on if it didnt need it came in plus im fed up of burning my arms etc when sleeping in the engine bay in the summer :D its ok i will enjoy having something others havnt :D

I've got them on both engines but both are type4 2.0s

  18. I don't have a pic but I guess it just stops the heat from exhaust ....

Gravel guards are different they fix to the bumper

  19. so your rear tin stays coolish ? i am looking to make one but , these catalogue diagrams dont show size height or owt . Shame

  20. If the drawings are to scale you could use a measurement of a piece you have. Won't be 100% but close enough. Have you tried the samba? I'm gonna have a look over there today as this is an interesting bit of kit
