  1. Think TSR are in Suffolk don't know if there's a place in Somerset

If you want a modern engine with modern levels of reliability, improved performance and economy, why not get a Brazilian Bay and it's all VW bits?;)

Because it doesn’t have a modern engine and it doesn’t have improved performance. Reliability and economy – maybe.

  4. Thats where it will go! Thanks dad.

  5. I can see why people go down the subaru route
I can see why people go down the big air cooled engine route
I can see why people stay stock
I have no idea why people buy Brazilian bays - each to their own though

Well done for uniting us again

  6. I nearly bought one when they first started importing them as there was an agent just down the road from me in blackburn at the time. Must have been around the early 90s. Bet its scrap now!

  7. nearly, really?

  8. If you want a cheaper DIY job, EFI on your Type 4 will set you back a lot less than a Scooby conversion.

I've not checked mpg on mine since completing the mapping (now with overrun fuel cut, so hopefully a gain there), but got a fairly steady 25 mpg during setup. Mine's a modified 2056 but I think it would work really well on a stock 2 litre.

  9. So it seems Im at the bottom of the table for mpg!

Subaru owners report even better mpg than that? :
    Type 4 2056cc, EFI. 25mpg
Type 1 2110cc, Twin 40s, heavy right foot. 20mpg often less

  10. If you got rid of the 40 carbs and fitted 40 ITBs with FI and crank fired ignition you would get a lot better economy.

Do Fellows supply the engine at that price ? I think i would keep all my old original stuff just incase .
To be honest not a bad thing to keep it all any way , if you ever needed or wanted to sell  good selling point if the buyer wishes to go stock which would be doubtful i suppose .

  12. Well......... i would say i considered it. It was 1992 i think. Was using mine for work and fancied the newness! The one i test drove was a microbus and thats what i was going to go for. It drove very well. I didnt like left hand drive though!

  13. Whats the ball park figure for fi? And i spose cfi too!

  14. Possibly, but I love it as it is - despite the poor mpg and the air filter stud breaking off, jamming the carbs open, before entering the engine, causing me to have a brief affair with another camper and then costing a lot to get the engine sorted!

  15. A full kit is about 3,300 US dollars, which was less in £ when I did it! Plus VAT when it comes in, dependent on the value written on the invoice. You could do it cheaper if you split what you buy rather than a kit. Maybe also possible to get a factory FI and modernise it with crank fire and proper modern kit so it's all mappable.

Agreed, but fitted that will cost what, £3,500 - £4,000? That buys a lot of fuel.
