The Subaru Engine Thread

  1. I agree - each to their own. However I think you've got the bit I highlighted in bold the wrong way around - I'm not desperate for it to work because I spent all that money on it. I spent all that money on it because now it'll work. And rather than it be at the top of it's ability at motorway speeds, it's actually only half the way to the rev limiter.

  2. '''When it dies I'm planning a large type 1 motor as that's what I understand. It's not the best route overall but it will suit me. It will probably cost more than a scooby and have less power and won't be original, ''

and will probably go pop, before a scooby ..;)

  3. and you have a better chance of making there and back

  4. So.. what firms do installs then and what's the actual cost.
are there any back-street individuals or forms that do it?

How much can it be done for if you buy the bits?

Fellows are about £6k (or were) but obviously you can offset a bit of it by selling your old engine / tins etc.
I think @chrisgooner used a guy called Jamie Lockyer up in North Wales somewhere.
@Sick Boy had his done by MAC (who shall not be named)
There are a few about, thats for sure.

  7. To add to this, it is possible to do it all yourself, it depends on how handy you are. Conversion bits can be bought through the Fellows website or from RJES, I think RJES will also do loom cutting and preparation too. There's lots of advice from those who have done it on vwkd.co.uk. If you haven't got a clue (like me) then its a steep learning curve and you're better off paying the professionals to do it.

There's a guy on Arsebook does looms too. Nick Tune I think?

  9. Sounds familiar. I'm in a Farcebook group for subaru conversions, but most of the members on there are Septics.

  10. Almost certainly!

  11. Fellows sell a kit for £3,800 plus VAT. Doesn't include the engine though.

I ticked a few of the option boxes and the price was £6,100 plus VAT ... if you didnt want some of the fancy bits (detailing) then could do it cheaper.

  12. that VAT is a passion killer. that takes it to 7320. no way. that's just too rich for me!

  13. If you went for there basic install it would be £5,495 plus VAT £1,099 = £6,954 I wonder if my wife will pay for mine to be done. Also depends on how much you might get back for your type 4 engine.

  14. plus there isn't anything wrong with your existing engine!

I'm going to do the pickup in spring as a learning excersise, then depending how that goes may do it for others.
