Fitted pistons and cylinders to the engine put heads on. Started fitting tinware.

Pistons and cylinders... AA "Assembled in the USA" means they oiled the cylinders, fitted piston rings, pushed pistons back in the cylinders and put them back in the Sugar Candy Mountain box .

  5. I think like a fighter pilot you should have a line of sticker’s on the van door signifying your blown engines Mick:)

Looking more like an engine now. Still a few more parts to bolt back on.

Fixed my wipers (again), changed the pin on my gearshift, and swapped the big engine battery for a smaller but new one. It now starts instantly rather than with a struggle.

Nothing got done today, other than putting the leisure battery on charge, due to the awful weather, looks like we may not go camping out tomorrow after all though.

Because there is nowhere to put anything in the cab, other than in the cardboard glove box that is falling to bits, I did order a pair of natty bamboo shelves to go under the dash from JK.

You could have ordered another glove box too..

Finally got him home. He’s been away since February in a lockup and then a workshop while I worked on him or called in some pro help for some tricky welding that was well above my skill level.

He hadn’t run for best part of 6 months but after a bit of churning - he started right up.

He is absolutely filthy inside and out so that’s the next job.

I want to get him clean again before I address the jobs that will make him safe (fuel lines & cv gaiters) before I get the interior back in.

The money shot :) New load bed and rear bulkhead. No holes and no rust. What an absolute mission though.

  17. Hi Mike, sure looks unpleasant and of course its worth trying to find a cause before rebuilding. Certainly looks like an excess of heat and another possible cause to consider might be a tighter than normal piston to bore fit. Whilst I understand the desire to avoid splitting the crankcase, perhaps you might consider splitting the big-end to check the state of the bearing shells and crank-pin, before rebuilding.

  18. I bet it’s a nice feeling to have him back home

    It sure is

I don’t think Mrs S is quite as pleased as me though. He takes up a lot of room and is slightly incontinent - marking his spot.

He’s had a good wash of the exterior and I’ve cleaned all the glass.

Will start on the interior tomorrow - weather permitting.

I fitted a new pair of sun visors, the originals were broken and grubby, it all looks a lot better and the Mrs will be happy as hers wasn’t usable at all.

When I was at the Goodwood Revival I got chatting to a guy selling vans and beetles. I told him how I had the throttle buried in the floor at 60, he reckoned that my twin carbs might not be fully opening and put me in contact with Butty’s Bits, who sent me a slightly longer lever that bolts on the end of the pedal shaft and pulls the cable. I fitted that, it was surprisingly easy. It feels more responsive just revving in neutral but I won’t really know until I get out on the road.

I also got the levers off the heater controls and pulled the instrument cluster out a bit to investigate why the panel doesn’t light up. Nothing found that helped but there’s a few loose connections and bulb holders to play around with in the future.
