Having been a lazy sod and taking the camper to a "VW Specialist" last week for a service..... on collecting it I was passed a broken thrust washer from the rocker shaft of cylinder 3 inlet side. They didn't contact me to inform me about it or to ask if I wanted a replacement fitting. They just allegedly checked the valve/tappet gaps and put the rocker covers back on.

So, today I have replaced said broken thrust washer and decided to check the rest whereupon I discovered another was cracked so that too was replaced with some spares I happen to have.

But what really got my goat was that the garage had used gasket sealant on the cork rocker gaskets which to me infers they didn't fit new gaskets (Christ they aren't expensive are they).

So I've had to clear all the green gunk off my rocker covers and the cylinder heads ensuring as best I can that none has fell off and gone into the push road tubes. I've even had to redo the valve/tappet clearances as they were way greater than 0.15mm.

There you go - always best to service it yourself. :)

Not at all essential lighting for these times.
IMHO the bigger size suits the van better than the smaller ones that are around today.
Tried to get some Cibie Oscars for mine but wasn't able to find anything available.

They're fab, even for those of us that don't have LHD wardrobe blind spots. You won't regret it

They may have used the gunk as adhesive. If it was only on the covers side. If the alternative was a saggy new gasket and 2 litres of oil blown over the exhaust and the oil light on 30 seconds from disaster, they did it right.
Basically you asked them to service it, not fault find and fix any faults they found. So they correctly did precisely what you asked,
so it would not come to a dispute over them having to charge you more than they quoted you for a service.
It annoys me when you get back exactly what you asked for from a garage, but it makes sense.

  7. The green gunk looks like Curil, which is pretty good stuff…

Strange attitude. I once took my type-4 engined bus to have the flywheel seal changed and got a big bill. When I picked it up they said it needed a circlip on the gearbox drive shaft but to replace it they'd have to take the engine out again with another big bill. They were so close but didn't even phone to ask, even though I'd specifically asked them to do so in such circumstances. That, like Jules's experience, is crap service from a so-called specialist working on 50 year old vehicles. It's not the same as taking your 4 year old car for a service, they should be expecting to find other trouble and ready and willing to deal with it. I spent my entire time doing exactly that. Almost zero jobs on an old vehicle like ours are straightforward, that's why owners go to "specialists"!

I do prefer it when a garage phones me up and says "theres more", but also I can see the point where a service is quoted for whatever 30 mins to an hour of work, and thats all the time allocated in a busy workshop. Thats not true.. Many a VW specialist can be distracted into half an hours unpaid chat..

  10. Yes, brilliant upgrade, best 6 pound odd I've spent on the Bus, wish I had done it sooner :hattip:

And the rest! Worse than that if someone phoned me because their van wouldn't start or idle, I'd talk them into/walk them through the main culprits just like we do on here and not earn a penny. lol The upside being it often gained me other work once they could drive it to me. :)

  12. How did you fix them on Andrew? I have got some but not put them on yet as the rubber/plastic seal thing on my old ones is all crumbly and appears unavailable. I'm thinking some kind of adhesive (tigerseal?) around the edge:thinking:

Refitted the starter motor and reversed it out to the front of the house so I can fully open the drivers door.... now begins the task of re-introducing the window glass to the window winding mechanism.

  15. Has the clamping bit slipped off?

I would think so, that’s what happened last time.
I had hoped fairy dust and the power of prayer might solve the problem, but I think probably glue would be better.

  18. Have you got a rubber strip in the clampy bit? Has it fallen to pieces?

    Hmmmm that explains that then!
    May take more than glue…..
