  2. Glued the a pillar trim back on, after the glue that the so called professional trimmer who installed my headliner failed. Not my friend who did the seats though. This time proper glue for vinyl….[IMG]

And got round to screwing the firex in!

Did you get that fitted right first time ?

Mine came with no instructions and caused me a bit of head scratching at first

Not quite sure what you mean, presumably the rainwater you refer to is already within the door panel? If it is then it won’t affect the ABS card. I don’t think I have an air vent (early ‘71 bay) . As an aside a great breathable membrane/trailer/boat cover can be made and sewn easily from breathable roofing felt. Doesn’t rip, is totally waterproof, breathable and cheap.

  5. You’ve met me, they would be pointless, and thinking of taking the coffee machine, rice cooker and pancake maker away next week though

he means water will run down the inside of your card and come out inside the bus rather than be directed by tucked in polythene to stay inside the door and run out of the proper drain hole. The cards will be fine but your tubs and seatbelt mount may end up permanently wet.

  7. ^this. Also if you did have vents, without an additional bit of membrane as per VW originals, water will splash through them. The tubs end up soaked.

  8. In order to get everything to line up properly I had to install mine slightly differently to @Soggz - but then my adaptor probably dates from the early 1990's so may differ slightly anyway? I fitted the flat square plate (supplied) against the pump gears (after lapping flat) and then the OG plate but with the rolled edge facing inwards. That's how mine's been since before '96 on all the engines I've had and never had any problems with it.

  9. That’s more how I would imagine it, especially the pump bit.

Aah I see thanks, I’ll whip them off (cards) and attach a membrane .

I’ll have a little roll round underneath and take a shot. It was a few years back and I can’t remember how it ended up but i know it didn’t fit first time.

  12. Kitchen unit fitted in to the camper, Victron BMV 712 (decided to treat myself to an early birthday present) battery monitor wired up, fridge wired up and wiring put in place for the yet you be purchased and fitted water pump. Two days left to finish it before we’re going away for a week

To me, it looks like your pump cover plate is inside out. The flange usually faces out, is it a special cover?

edit : oops, I should have read your words.

Assuming there's a packer under soggz's it comes to the same, I'd do what Soggz did and use my pump cover as nature intended and the supplied packing piece for that. Maybe your pump cover was worn and you got a new surface doing it that way?

I used my pump cover, where it should be.
Then two washers on each stud.
    Then the adapter.
The ‘right wing’ of the adapter,I drilled out a M10 threaded hole in the block, but put two washers in between the wing and the case,to take up the stress when tightening.
The hole is 25mm deep,as taken from the old case as reference, the gap the washer take up is 3mm including the wing, and the spacer on the engine bar is 20mm.
    So I cut a bolt at 46mm.
And I have no idea what I’m doing. (I chucked the square packing piece away and used washers.)

1821A3FD-413C-415E-97A6-F706B24C0270.jpeg And if you look at the original oil pump plate, you will see that it’s cut out to take the adapter plate. The ‘high corners’ on the bottom, are taller than the top corners.
You don’t notice it,until you take the cover off and lie it flat, upside down on its corners.
How many of you have noticed that on yours?

  17. I think that’s just how the pressing is done. No secret curves ;)

If you are serious I would reconsider that move. The whole assembly will be a lot more study with the spacer rather than washers which will make it less likely to develop a leak.

You know how it is when you're trying to smash something up and the more solidly it's fixed together the harder it is to do, any slight movement and you work on it... same thing kind of - washers will allow flex that the spacer would not. That's the gardeners explanation, I won't bore you with engineering speak. :)

Tbh, I tried it with the spacer, put the adapter plate on, and tightened it all up.
I could poke the spacer with a screwdriver around the edge of the plate, and it rattled as though it needed to be about A mm thicker, as the adapter plate rests on the lip of the pump cover, if you see what I mean.

    Sure?
    That’s lucky then…
Bearing in mind that these engines are also mounted in places all over the world being used as pumps, generators, etc…probably…;)
