Took him for a spin and picked up a set of crappy old standard wheels to put on whilst mine are away being powdercoated. They really are only fit for the bin, but it saves having him up on 4 axle stands for a couple of weeks. Especially as I don't have four axle stands!

  2. Are you having your wheels done in Salisbury?

    Ringwood.

Also made tentative arrangements to get the engine out after Easter, to finally get around to fitting the thermostat. Will probably get the tinware / fan shroud powdercoated whilst it's out, and give the engine bay a much needed coat of paint. I'm told the prep inside the noisy cupboard is an absolute pig. Any top tips (such as what to do with all the wiring) will be most welcome.

  5. Wrap the wiring up in 2" wide masking tape? Well, that's what I did on the Bug, anyway. The wide stuff is easier as you get better coverage per revolution.

Obviously, don't forget to label it all :hattip:

  6. Deffo worth stripping off all the tinware and having it powder coated while you've got the opportunity, including your fancy fan shroud ;).

Engine compartment is best brush-painted. Worth ordering a pot of Rustoleum CombiColor in "Clem Orange" from Avenue Coatings in Slough. Hopefully the weather'll warm up enough for it to dry. Wiring can just be tied up to the ceiling.

Worth taking a look at your fuel tank and breathers while you've got the whole lot out. Never a dull moment!

I've been painting under wheel arches with Rustoleum CombiColour, standard racing green from Homebase. The bus is in the garage, it's still cold but the paint has dried ok.

I think that you will find that they have space for five relays. I like you only use four as I find that quite enough in there. Other relays are in the engine bay and under the dashboard above the fuse box to the left.

What other relays are you using over the 2 needed?
    What are they for

  12. Nice very local drive in the van this afternoon to check out the sound proofing. That Silent Coat has made a huge difference and well worth doing. Next week I should be getting on with the Dodo Mat Insulation and plastic fleece stuff in the voids. That lot should make the van even quieter and warmer.

  13. Are you quite sure ;)? Sure I’ve only got four. Two additional on the fusebox for the wash/wipe and horns. I had to bolt the other ones (x3) to the doorframe...

<edit> Blimey, you’re right. I’ll have to find another relay to stuff in now.

You’re right! I knew I’d used them all and I had to go and look, well, feel actually I can’t see them behind the parcel shelf. There are indeed five; indicators, headlights, wipers, horns and I think rear fog lights. I have one other for the remote central locking to flash the indicators but I don’t have any under the dashboard above the fuse box to the left.

  17. Actually, not sure the the second from right would accept a standard relay base?

Wash wipe/ intermittent, front fogs, in the fuse box and elsewhere dimmable spots, heated rear window and stop lights as I have a tow bar and high view light.
    Sounds like a Christmas tree!!

  20. Did some doorpost knitting. If you're prone to mental instability, I'd suggest crimping Superseal connectors isn't the job for you.
