And send Avenue something with the colour of your bus on it, they'll colour match it too.

  7. It didn’t appear to have an Italian captain

Must look on me chart to see how deep the water is there. Wasn’t far offshore. Assume it was parked waiting to go into Poole harbour.

    Good!

Wasn't Poole Harbour a bit tricky and narrow at one time plus that chain link ferry across from Sandbanks to Studland caused chaos at the harbour mouth? Im going back a few years mind.

  9. It's been out of action for a while. Not sure if it's fixed yet - @JamesLey ? It stripped a big cog and had to be hauled off to Southampton for repairs.

There's a channel for the big stuff into Poole. Probably not wise to stray into it in your dingy, with big gravel freighters coming the other way

Back in action today apparently! https://twitter.com/SandbanksFerry/status/1272852872724713473

Social distancing rules mean if you're crossing you have to keep your windows closed, which might not be much fun in the bay.

I think a few weeks back when lockdown was eased a bit they caught people launching their boats from the ferry approaches. Not the best idea as it's relatively deep there, has quite a current and I suspect there must be a bit of a drop off once you clear the approaches!

My Grandad used to enjoy watching the ferry boats head into port, many years ago, from memory there was a good vantage point close by the docking point on Sandbanks.

I wonder how many journeys had been made before the cog stripped?

  12. Can't find the article on it, but the engine/clanking mechanism was a one-off. Think there have been three ferries since they started way back?

They had to get the drawings and cast/machine a new bit, as I recall.

  13. Yaay! That clanking noise is part of my childhood :)

Pretty vicious currents around the harbour entrance. I wouldn't fancy swimming there

The ferry was old back in 1979 ish & was still going strong in 1987 when they moved back up into Derbyshire

  15. I think the original dates back to the 1930s, which was the heyday of Sandbanks.

    <edit> 1923, apparently.

  17. It's the P&O Aurora probably in the absence of paying passengers using the bay as a holding anchorage, other cruise ships been doing similar in Weymouth Bay. Would be surprised if they were heading into Poole Harbour unless they wanted to take a peek at Lord Baden Powells statue. Where they are chart shows about 15m to which you can add about 1 to 2 metres depending on high or low water.

  18. Makes sense. It didn't seem to be doing much.

From time to time they tow the mobile oil rig to much the same spot (but further out) to check the Purbeck oil field. V. interesting to look at at night with binoculars.
