  1. Not to mention what the painter will curse you for, when it comes to getting it back off.

Stick with a weekly polish and save up.

A bit further on towards taking the engine out to swap the flywheel and it's seals.
Carbs off, foam seal off, petrol and wiring disconnected and all shoved through the holes where appropriate or stuffed out of the way.
Left to do is the oil sandwich plate, filter and servo vacuum which I'll do on the day.
I should probably remove the heat risers, control boxes and concertina pipes when the ground has dried more.

Meanwhile... @Barry Haynes this is knackered? How long are yours after you fix them?

@zedders are you sure that's knackered looks pretty compressed to me have you taken it off and tested it in boiling water on the cooker, 99% of the time they fail in the open state to save your engine from cooking

That's the thing - the flaps were permanently open...and the cable nut doesn't screw right on...and it does look like it could have caught on the bracket.

I know, I know - heat some water up. BRB

  7. I have decided there is a special place in hell reserved for used CV joint grease. I just hope I don't end up there alongside

  13. April 6th fella..... I actually went in to the post office. It took me three post offices though before they knew what I meant!
    So, 8 weeks-ish?

  14. If it’s partially compressed, implies it’s not leaking, as Baz said.

Groovy! And yes you are both correct.

The dodah on the end of the cable was too long which prevented the long nut screwing right on. That left enough gap to hang up on the bracket which is why when I first looked under it looked expanded. That's my theory, the nut had witness marks and the round hole in the bracket is hexagonal on one side. I've filed the cable nodule down to get rid of the gap.

It would have been more sensible to do this before spending £*!@ on a new one from the states. It's been like that for at least 2 years!

That looks not too bad, but maybe not perfect? The length (cold) should be 35mm.

    It's 33mm.
Expands to the correct 46mm which is the bracket internal size.

  19. Mine seems to stick open, necessitating a wee check before setting off from cold, a gentle prod and it shuts itself. Perhaps it's set wrong too? Another thing on the list

It's now on my list to keep an eye on.
Are you talking type-1 or 4? I think you have both? The type-1 style I would say is more prone to jamming up - the bushes on the flaps are often worn through.
