Got it all back in this afternoon, after another 4 hours made a few improvements on the way back in, like fixing the EGR valve used as a thermostatic flap vacuum valve to a bracket.

It runs, seemingly OK. But I have still to complete a final tune up, the tappets on the right need a bit of adjustment after the head came off and went back on.

But its back on the road.

Just as well I put it back together. Today I had to go into work in it. Made it there and back OK so thats 35 miles. No problems. Even had more hot air after I adjusted the heater cables properly , or rather I kinked one to the correct length- the cable outer has slid down the tube..

Van was running really well apart from popping and banging on the overrun.

Decided to check all the basics starting with the tappets and replaced the tappet nuts at the same time. Started it up and when warm, checked the timing.

Everything was running fine so took it for a run. After about 3 miles, loss of power and not running on all four cylinders. I'm hoping I didn't tighten one of the tappets properly.

Limped home and put it in the garage to look at another day.

  4. Have you fitted a new exhaust, or has the existing one got a hole in it? Reduced back-pressure usually the cause of overrun popping and banging.

If just a new, clean exhaust, nothing much you can do apart from enjoying frightening pedestrians

Nope on the replacementfront. Exhaust doesn't have any holes either.

  6. I'd take another look at your tappets, then.

Popping and banging and loss of power could be a loose spark plug lead or bad ignition switch/loose wire or condenser/points/electronic module, if it happens while you are driving normally.

Three miles is just beginning to warm up, so I would expect it to be Big Hands Syndrome where you knocked something unexpected while reaching for something else. Or it fell off because it was never done up properly the last time you touched it..

The pops and crackles on overrun are usually caused by exhaust leaks, despite protestations about the perfection of ones exhaust and its attachment to the engine - look carefully for black marks where the exhaust joins the head..

And three new cylinder heads, 4 crank pulleys, two fan belts, three pistons and cylinders and some bits for @snotty's fence :D

More like 5 fan belts, 4 alternator pulleys , some cracked and shredded with shims coming through the cracks, one alternator, 4 woodruff keys, and 3 crank pulleys and then a new fan and peace..

    impressive!!

In all seriousness, your bus get used a heck of a lot, probably one of the most on here.

We ought to do a tally up at the start of 2025, see who gets top spot :D

  17. My back's getting too creaky for polishing vans, so invested in this today. Effortless!

A pricey, but top bit of kit. Should've bought one years ago.
