Our 'recon' wbx short engine from well known and not cheap supplier had a manky old beetle oil pump fitted! I imagine that was out of spec back in the mid 60s..
It is Claude's Buggies that make the one that most recommend as being the go-to. Not expensive either relatively.. but then you know more about all that malarky than I ever will.

Original used cam. Past its best. The replacement head that Paul had fitted afterwards the tappets were over tightened by a couple of turns.

  4. 0.15 gear to gear
    0.05 gear to case.
    0.02 float

Hydraulic though or do you mean hydro pre-load plus a couple of turns?
There's the rattle that was the last straw.
I suspect you're right, but 3 engines all ticking over like space heaters isn't normal, got to be something?

  7. No. Pre loaded plus a couple of turns too much. This was a new head paneuropaul had fitted after as the valve seized in the head. The head that came fitted all guides are knackered and 1 fell out

It's always been my view that rebuilding engines is a foolish enterprise to embark on - engine doesn't make warranty - profit gone, Goes wrong twice and you're paying to build other people engines so it's no surprise at that point it becomes a case of slapping any old thing on or robbing Peter to pay Paul. There can only be losers as everything spirals out of control.

Different if you were an apprentice trained motor mechanic with 20 years experience working for an engine restorer who DID know what they were doing before you started yourself. Being bloody minded and having an ego isn't enough. [edit: being bloody minded and having an ego is actually probably in my estimation also necessary though]

Just seeing if there are any positives. I used to know Paul quite well and I find it difficult to equate that Paul with dishonesty. Pig headed for sure but not dishonest. Of course I may be a terrible judge of character but I first met him when he came to my house in the evenings, in the dark and cold after his day job to weld up my van for very reasonable money. He worked hard for it in the worst of circumstances, with a smile on his face. We often fed him his dinner in the house, he was a nice guy. Later he sold me an excellent 6 rib box for £450 when the going rate was £600. I could go on.
It's a puzzle how things went so badly but I know he agreed (offered!) to do paras van for swapsies to help para out of the poop when he had to move (when what he needed was £paid work) for instance. I honestly think the initial hole he dug himself into was from trying to be helpful to his own detriment.

It probably cost him dearly taking on Razzy as a customer because Razzy quite rightly does not shrug his shoulders and move on. tee-hee - I actually warned Paul specifically about that but his view was no problem because he'd build an excellent engine and our Razzyy would be a satisfied customer. Much the same as I advised him strongly not to get into the engine building game at all but... same result. There's only so much unsolicited advice you can give without being insulting.

At first I didn’t understand what was going on
Now I see what this post is about some dude who built an engine for someone

This is an interesting read but I’m always a bit uneasy when things get more personal. We don’t want another MAC scenario.

  17. I think this is a fair to point to make, @bernjb56, and, I agree, this thread could quickly go all wrong, especially if it gets more personal, but coming to @zedders aid here, he hasn't actually said anything derogatory, least ways not that I can tell, he hasn't.

Sure, I just try to understand. I wasn't so clever myself and certainly let down one of our members pretty badly, though I did try and make it right with £'s I didn't have. It cost me a friggin fortune running Zed's in all honesty, I def did not make money, I was a terrible businessman, I wanted to be honest and helpful. I feel I have some insight.
The difference being that I could afford to loose it.
Feel free to tidy up the thread though, you're probably right, I shouldn't ponder out loud - then again, seems he's allegedly shafted a few people so where is the line?

I get that from your posts. I was talking more generally really. You probably understand the implications as much as anyone.

Personally I am finding the thread interesting and agree with Bern you should keep to comments about the engine build, strip down and flaws to avoid a potential MAC situation.
