  1. Well I bought it, thought is was worth the dosh in bits. I had a think after and decided that it would be interesting to know whats up with it. I have started to take it apart but won't go any further until next Tuesday as I am paying a person I know and a friend of the father in law to check things, i can measure a log I want to cut and thats about it. He is an engineer so thought why not. I have got as far as the original head off but have stopped so he can check deck height etc. The pushrod tubes are sealed into the head and came out the block together fixed into the head. Thats all for now. Watch this space. @paneuropaul

    No pics of that head?

  3. Sorry, my bad back took a turn for the worse this morning, that was as much as I could stand, literally. I will nip round tomorrow to take the other header off and get some. Any part specifically ?

  4. That engine looks very familiar…

    Combustion chambers,
Get it at TDC - piston top for a deck guestimate and a general gander at how it was running. Anything will help. We know he thought 9.5 or even 10:1 was ok and didn't appear to connect cam and CR.
When you removed the fan housing did the flaps appear correct? It's possible to inside out the linkage on the left one. If it was correct the flap would have been up high and sprung even higher as you removed the fan housing. As someone who used to argue on here than the flaps weren't even needed... you never know.

  6. About all I know about it to be honest is, he had it built, valves seized in the head on cylinder 3, his local garage replaced the head. He did 300 miles with it and it sounded off. Does not trust it and I bought it.

  7. Flaps are still in fan housing, there was not a stat fitted that I am told was paid for, there was no bracket either. Will get pic of fan housing if I can bend back down to the floor :)

They look right on your first pic (the rod looks right position), but...
If the linkage in the left side was inside out, the bar would not move (too late but PO might know) which would explain the overheating (flap position) and lack of thermostat (fitting one that did nothing might be noticed because PO would try and make it work, thereby focussing attention on the flaps not moving blah, blah). I'm reading a lot from nothing I know, but please try and not let anythng daft like this get past you. It's entirely possible that someone who thought these flaps were not needed didn't know how to fit them either and repeated that same error over and over.

Maybe not this error, but there was something.

If I'd been well enough I'd have raced you to this engine even though I have no use for it and nowhere to store it or work on it. lol This has been bugging me for almost a decade.

  9. Note to one self, must try harder.

Just take your time and be a detective, you've stripped loads of these, you should spot oddities?

  11. What like the split fuel pipe, the old oil cooler, the ridge in the flywheel seal area, the alternator seal missing and the alternator boot had it. ;-)

Great job so far, don't rush coz your back hurts.

Yes those things! Maybe spell it out for us plonkers. Old oil cooler is fine, I wondered why the pic, I can't see what the pump cover pic is showing, don't see any fuel line split or a pic of the flywheel at all. Don't keep it all secret. :)

LVH Google might save some typing.

Another problem arise if you bought a second hand flaps bar which is twisted (they are quite soft ) and you set the system up and it does not open and close in the right positioning .
You put the top tins on and you won't know the flawed position ...this happened to me ...but fortunately noticed that some thing was not quite right .

For Ray, Nick and Paul to have all had issues you'd have thought there must be some basic commonality. It's bugged all of us who recall some of the pain these chaps endured at the time:thinking:

Absolutely! I'm well aware a LOT of people are hoping Mick will crack it and many of them have lost £K's in this game which I haven't. I think you may have underestimated the size of the problem though, I doubt it was "just" three.

  19. I'd indeed pay for a thermostat, and he sourced it from you Steve @zedders. As it's not fitted now it never was I also paid to have the carbs rebuilt by Stateside tuning and even in my unknowledgeable state I now know that not to be the case.
I think the guy is a rip off merchant pure and simple, he over promises and under delivers. Takes on too much work because he's money grabbing and then rushes it when people, like me keep phoning up and asking when whatever it is will be ready. Look at @paradox bus. For the record he had that engine for 5 months, told me it would take 3 weeks.
He's lucky he lives in the Newcastle area 300+ miles from me.

Does anyone know what the engine spec is supposed to be? Engine capacity, piston type, head type, cam type, oil pump size, compression ratio, deck height etc.

What LVH customers say...****'s knowledge of VW's is second to none and I wouldn't let anyone else look after Mali our Type 2 Bay camper

From TLB **** rebuilt my engine, really pleased with it, so much better on the hills than it was, top job, sure you'll pleased yours when you get it back.
