Okay, so it's all undone and ready to remove. Starter battery disconnected but I still got a spark!! Leisure battery with VSR split charger, plus solar that goes direct to the leisure battery (not the starter battery) What else should I have disconnected? The sun is out, so is it okay to disconnect the leisure battery too?
Disconnect the -ve terminals on both batteries. If the VSR is triggered somehow, it'll be connecting both batt +ves together, so there will still be power present on the starter.
I'll have a look and see how it's all wired - I didn't do the VSR, but can't be that complicated?! The starter battery is completely out of the loop (positive and earth off) so there must be something connecting the leisure battery into the starter cabling. Didn't know if was okay to disconnect the leisure battery with the solar panels still working in the sunshine. I'll put a blanket over them to be sure too....
aah, I thought it was connected to the starter battery rather than to the cabling that is connected to the battery. Now I look at it, it makes perfect sense. Doh! Big thick red VSR cable removed from starter battery positive cabling bundle and covered in insulating tape (I don't know whether this is important, but it makes me feel slightly better!) So I think now I don't need to disconnect the leisure battery? I'm not sure I should be let loose with electrickery really!
It is (or should be), but the starter batt +ve is also connected to everything else (including the starter). Just disconnect the -ves of both batteries. Then nothing will be connected to anything.
