So how much does a Train driver earn then?

On the first part of HS2 they are planning to have a reduced version of a driver rather than a fully fledged driver. They won't have the route knowledge a normal driver would have and will only be able to drive the train on that one stretch and so reduce costs. I think it's is on the London to Crewe section, but I'm not 100% certain. They are certainly looking at driverless trains on the London tube.

Yep, those striking are probably striking to help improve the customer's experience or welfare as well as their own.

Frankly I'm fine with them defending their own corner, I don't think they should have to defend their actions with claims of safety etc. Lucky them to have some semblance of a "union". It's about time other trades got together to defend themselves too... and were prepared to actually take meaningful action.
    Bring it on!

They've already done that with tickets - you hardly see a staffed kiosk at most stations, and then you get on the train and there is no one to check your ticket. I reckon so many people don't pay as they know they can get away with it as there are very few staff.

I'm on the underground, I will definitely be on strike tomorrow night, I've been "on" for 18yrs now I'm staff not a contractor, I won't lie , yes we get paid well, but we never used to, it was our union that helped us fight for our terms and conditions, do I think we are overpaid yes possibly when you compare yourself to police, fire, ambulance, (brother is a paramedic) , people who IMO put themselves in real danger fir there job, you have all heard of the stories of we only work 3hrs a night that is also mostly true , but what is not reported is the 3hrs before hand getting materials ready for our "3 hrs work" , I work permanent nights so I'm also expected to be alive for less time than a day worker,

We earn well and we pay our taxes to suit , we are not self employed so paye so nothing hidden,

Our main gripe is our pensions, the whole reason we go to work is so when we retire we can live a reasonable life, I don't like it when I hear that the fares are being increased that is not our aim that is the government's, we don't always agree in what we strike for but normally there are a few issues so you vote for one and it includes something else,

I think the days of strong unions are numbered and certainly no new unions will be formed , if only the police ,nurses, fire ect had a decent union thin maybe different

  8. It will be interesting to see what does happen,
    With this one,
May very well keep some support from the general public until it really starts to affect them but
I can’t see 50.000 copper’s battering them back to work
    Like the miners strike though,
Maybe a general strike is needed,
I don’t think there is a peasant in the country who isn’t feeling the pinch atm o_O

  10. Never needed to Wilf
If I didn’t like the job or was unhappy I just left ,
I have never been in a job that had a union either,
There’s no point stewing on a problem get and sort it out, though I do know that there are people that can’t do that depending on the work that they do or there workplace,
I have always also supported the underdog,
Year’s ago I was on holiday in Cornwall once when I saw a young polish or Eastern European farm lad with a broken down tractor being shouted at by a very irate farm manager type with a Range Rover ,
So I stopped my car got out told him to leave him alone and there was an altercation and unfortunately he got thumped in the mouth ,
    That’s the only strike I remember .

All a major set of strikes will do is go on until everbody "hates the strikers", as people lose jobs and end up even worse off in the fallout.
Then the government can" save us all" by breaking the power of the remaining unions.
Also remember how the likes of Russia will be loving this.
Take care. Your game may play out badly

  14. Thing is some farmers are still living in the Victorian era and think they they can treat people badly !
And he called me a scummy Lundinner for interfering.o_O

Personally I think we should have general strike in support of teachers, nurses, police and truck drivers so we can all get some semblance of decent pay and a work life balance back. Oh and another one later to make the government bring down fuel prices and some of the greedy taxation- what’s VAT all about now we’ve left the European Union wasn’t that introduced to Replace manufacturer purchase tax to help pay for European membership?

I suppose they could call it something else now but it's not going to go away is it?
    You earn £1
    Employers NI = 15.05% on that £1 = £0.1505
    Employees NI = 13.8% on that whole £1 = £0.138
    PAYE basic rate = 20%, again on that whole £1 = £0.20
So out of that £1 there is £0.5105 - Damn, half of it's gone already.
Spend the 51p and 10p of that is VAT so your £1 turned into 40p
Spend it on petrol and...
Some would say our government taxes us too much but I think the main complaint would be that they waste so much of it and... even when they spend it say on a nurses salary, they grab back 60% of it going around that tax loop again.
Robber Barons really, with a sheen of "For the common good" and "democracy" to make it seem like we approve.
No, I don't have an answer but I do find it offensive that your good old worker must accept that "we can't afford it" while "we" spend £100,000,000,000 on HS2 white elephant (2019 prices/estimate) for example. Or £664,000,000 on consultants to ponder over covid just last year.
[edit: actually I think the PAYE is after employERS NI so I've exaggerated a bit.]

Or we could go all out no taxation and pay for what we need?

when i was at university ,my french housemate said they tax at 50% on everything, perhaps theirs sounds expensive but is it? cant complain about the roads and expect to pay less for their upkeep etc, similarly the energy companies going bankrupt because to many folks wanted to pay less than the minimum, fix for 5 years etc, prices cant be constantly pushed down and cost( wages etc) get constantly pushed up

I’d imagine Mr gaffer type on £100k + might agree with that but young nurses or similar just starting out in life on 24k with a 60k student debt might strongly disagree, there has to be a balance!
