So how much does a Train driver earn then?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Pedro del monkeybike, Jun 20, 2022.

  1. It’s probably a fair bit, as nowhere near the minimum wage
But as usual they go on strike if they don’t get their own way .:D

Its not the train drivers striking alone, there are trackworkers, signalling engineers and others.

One of the lads has worked on the tracks for years and is a hardened track ganger.

They have not had a pay rise for two or more years, they have been told money is going to be taken from pensions, zero hours contracts and if they do strike, agency workers will replace them. They are worried rail standards will drop and H & S will go out of the window when the 3000 staff have been made redundant resulting in safety standards being cut.

Grant Schapps has condemned P & O Ferries for what they did yet has threatened the rail workers with the same policy.

I was watching subtitles in a tv in a pub yesterday afternoon and the quotes were something like the railway staff had been itching to strike. Making it sound like they just wanted to strike for no reason

Nothing to do with their pay and conditions and also the safety of on train staff and passengers. Also when they start saying about earnings it’s another divisive way to try and take away support for them. I don’t care if they earn more than me, that’s not the point.

Also shutting down ticket offices will affect lots of people who don’t have access to online purchasing, or who use cash

    Strikers have my support.

  4. Who has told them that?

Grant Schapps has told there (Network Rail) upper management formally. They are (or are going to be) back under govt control.

  8. My dad was a train driver for over 30 years. He retired about 5 years ago and his earnings then were just over 40k a year

Some 19yrs ago whilst on the summer holidays from University, my nephew started to work on the railway lines. He had a friend who's father got him a job labouring under supervision replacing the lines, sleepers and other equipment.

At that time I had been a Police Officer for some 15yrs and was some 3yrs at the top of my pay scale as the increments were at (that time) yearly and minimal. I was shocked when I found out my nephew was earning more than me and what his earning potential could have been had he took the job on permanently. Unfortunately for him after a few weeks a railway line squashed his thumb and he never went back.

When I retired in 2017, my standard pay (I refused to do overtime) had dropped by over £2000 from what it was 5 years earlier (special priority payments and competency related pay were taken away and only given to higher tanking staff) and I had not had a pay rise since 2010. I was not allowed to go on strike and if I did so (or encouraged others to do so) I could be placed in prison as it's unlawful!

Never trust the Government and remember, if a politicians lips are moving then they are lying

So I'm all for the railway staff and hope they get what they want.

Usual divide and conquer. Lets focus on one individuals pay packet to highlight what suits.
The government will not negotiate while saying we need to talk.
Looks like we are back to the tactics of the 80s
Strap yourselves in folks looks like we're in for a bumpy ride ahead.

I’ve just woken up as worked lastnight, but I’ll reply later when I’ve got my head together, but don’t believe everything that’s being put out in the media!

    Bumpy ride indeed.

Add college and university lecturers and support staff balloting at the moment on whether to strike. Folk have had enough of the current incumberent's abismal handling of Covid, missing billions, changes to domestic fuel price capping and cost of living. They use the usual spin (yes, I know most politicians do), three word marmite, and poor decisions that affect the majority of the country whilst the 1% thrive.

    Viva La R...........

Never understood how people expect a strike to have any effect if it doesn't effect anyone. lol

  14. The salaries quoted often include overtime as lots of drivers do overtime. Not always voluntarily, but because train operators rely on them doing it to offset their under resourcing. Personally, I think anyone directly responsible for the safety and welfare of train passengers deserves every penny they can get.

Mark, NR was effectively re-nationalised back in 2014, but they did not like to call it so back then. They are looking at changing the whole industry ....again, some time soon and sort of joining up the trains companies (Choo Choo private peeps) with NR (non too civil service peeps). But as far as I can tell the new set up is not great and rather than taking the opportunity to do it right, they're taking the opportunity to fxxxk it up again

  18. Not sure I would be wanting to be a train driver

The new Metro trains for Sydney are driverless

People use to earn huge pay packets as a train driver out NW Western Australia on the iron ore trains.
They are all driverless these days as well
