Shootings in Paris

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Barry Haynes, Nov 13, 2015.

  1. I can't believe MI6 are getting all that money and extra staff. I'm on about the extra or even maintaining the day to day levels of protection as I really do think that the UK would struggle to cope with the attack in Paris.
I'm also frustrated at some of the well intended naivety. As I've posted before, men are violent creatures and it rather be protected by a bigger stick than a man who wants to talk about it to animals who prefer to meet their god.
    Sorry rant over.

Can't believe or don't believe? Just in case - DC announced it yesterday. But then this is the same man who with his local MP hat on, has written to his local council complaining about the cutbacks. Now that's either thick, or he thinks he's being funny and clever. Take your pick, either way I wouldn't trust him to make me a cup of tea.

So the French have binned the Stability Of Growth Pact in order to recruit 17,000 people into security and military roles and arm up to take the fight to ISIS.

    Observations...

    • The sellers of weapons must be in a deep sense of glee.
    • Rather than pathetically ask for European reform, yet again the French simply ignore it to cause reform, maybe our guys can learn a thing or two.
    • The end of most recessions is war...the economic stimulus was bought again in the blood of innocents.

  8. We've all been celebrating the Battle of Britain and the men of violence that took to the sky to defend our liberty. We remembered them on Armistice day and remembrance Sunday.... should I go on! When the men that chose this path are outnumbered or exhausted then the men of violence becomes the men in the street. No longer faceless or distanced from the rest of society.

I think you are confusing tyranny with capitalism.

I have never celebrated war in any way whatsoever. I remember the dead ( My family ) I buy a poppy to remember what those poor saps gave up and to support the soldier victims of todays greed driven wars. If you read back through my posts you will read the words ' I hate war' posted on at least 4 occasions. I will say it again, just so as you understand me. ' I hate war!'

  12. I don't like your use of word 'saps'. Unless you can tell me there is a definition other than foolish persons.

This is exactly right ' foolish people' unfortunately we are all susceptible to this foolishness, me included. There was a time I applied to join the RAF as I thought it the right thing to do. They never had me, but I was no loss to them, I am sure there are better defenders of our rights in the armed forces than I would ever have become.

The dillusion that we defend 'our' rights is slightly off target ( Pardon the pun) As I wrote a week ago. My grandad fought all through WW2. he got a plate in his head and a few medals that he threw in the bin as he couldn't even feed his family when he was demobbed ( ill health , no job) His wife died of cancer because there was no health service back then and medicine and DRs cost money.

The local squire still had his land though, and the Germans hadn't got their hands on it. The British government at this time feared a uprising from the hordes of demobbed, disgruntled soldiers and brought in the welfare state to appease them. Fact not googled. It's all there to read if anyone wants to.

Yes unfortunately we can all be drawn into a cause, be it fighting the nazis or Islam. It pays to read the bigger picture. Read Afghanistan ' the great game' and allow yourself a wry smile!

Are you saying the reprogramming of 16 year old infantry soldiers didn't turn them into autonomons only capable of following orders?

Saps is not disrespectful to them I suspect, more damming of the process that would not exist were it not for those in the minority that rush to wage war.

I think pickles was referring to my use of the word saps in association with our forces. I hope I have explained that now.

I know, I was giving my thoughts on the use of that word.

Like I've said, the military, especially a conscripted one, needs few thinkers, more doers....gullible is probably harsh, but follow orders without question is hard to encompasse with words like loyalty when the order issuers at the top have questionable motives.

  17. I suppose that when I swore an oath to protect to protect life and later on went on to carry firearms in order to do so, that also made me a 'sap'. Different from being called a pleb I suppose.

Were there a war that required us all to bear arms, the process that would compel us to follow orders would make us all saps.

If you left people to question motives and pause, then you'd have little cohesion.

As stated, for me, that term is not damming to the people involved.
