Shootings in Paris

  1. The West's mistake in Iraq was thinking that it could function as a modern democracy one the Saddam was kicked out. Of course, all we did was release them from a brutal dictatorship so that they could fight each other. The Iraqi mother in question is most likely to have seen her family killed by a 'fellow' Muslim, not an American, so blaming the West for everything isn't correct. Sunnis and Shias were fighting each other before we arrived on the scene, and it appears that they intend to carry on into the future.

  2. We are where we are by our rigorous pursuit of imperialism. You can't consider these most recent events without a global, historical context. The western world is a military-industrial complex, whose continued existence depends on the acquisition and control of scarce resources. If they grew carrots in Kuwait, we wouldn't have invaded Iraq...
Rather than spending trillions on weaponry and other Machiavellian structures to support continued warfare, to our short-term advantage, maybe we could spend it on technologies to end malnutrition, medecines, renewable energy, education, health, social infrastructure, and, in particular, viable alternatives to oil...spread it around a little more fairly....things that will aid reconcilliation, promote tolerance and mutual respect...the stumbling block to this apparent Utopia is that the hands that currently operate the levers of power belong to those with a vested interest in chaos and inequality. Yes, I know it may seem naive and idealistic, but surely it's something to aim for, rather than more of the same.

As Paul Mason wrote in his recent article, the purpose of war is to give yourself a strong position at a peace conference. I'm sure peace will be brokered in the foreseeable future, death cults by nature, are unsustainable

It's a shame we didn't find an alternative to oil 45 years ago ...But on the other hand Demon's are eternal .

  7. for the record, Hollande called the Paris attacks an act of war....primarily so he can invoke Article 5 of The Nato Treaty...thus legalizing a previously illegal intervention...this war will not be brought to an end by bombing, IMO.

  8. Who cares? France is bombing a load of murdering thugs who think little of the mass killings of innocent unarmed men, women and children. He gets my vote.

Sorry but he doesn't get mine. Fighting for peace is like f****** for virginity. Every single war has eventually been ended by the combatants sitting down together and talking.

  10. Yeah but only after they've knocked seven bells of sh×t out of each other.

Unfortunately you're right but this problem won't be solved until there is a peaceful solution in the Middle East. I have no idea what that should be and I fear it won't happen for many years to come.

  12. Given their use of the suicide bomber as a weapon of choice it could be a bit tricky finding someone foolhardy enough to sit within a mile of them. Put simply if death is seen as an honour with rewards you are not dealing with rational beings..."normal" rules of coping with such a situation may not apply if survival is at stake.

I don't agree with everything Vanorak is saying, but along similar lines, trying to look at the bigger picture for humanity...
Time and again the West expresses outrage that war isn't being fought to the rules we made up.
We are encouraged to think that we can fight a war by proxy from our armchairs with no risk to ourselves as long as we stick to these rules ourselves. So when it goes wrong it's the "terrorist's" fault for not playing by our rules.
When I first heard of wars and POW's as a 5 year old I thought something didn't add up.

Yeah, I did say I had no idea what the solution might be. I must also admit that I've gone right off big black beards.

A replacement for oil will certainly help .....electric motors in our buses , no longer called the noisy cupboard .
You will certainly no when your wheel bearings are on the way out a lot earlier .

Speaking as a peaceful hirsuitist, I'll say this for Islam, it forbids Usury....the lending of money at interest....the very thing that has lead to the deaths of millions worldwide.

Take the time to read this..it's long, it's informative, it's an opinion

I agree . In short we are both at war messy as it is . But when two go to war , or several for that matter , you have basically made a covenant with death, a sort of an agreement with hell .
I am afraid there are no rules of decency then .

  19. In the interests of balance there are still 129 corpses to be claimed by their families, mostly young people and at least 40 people who might not make it!

Keeping the balance going, that is a tiny figure compared to what is happening every day in the middle east.
