My Doc picked up an abnormally a couple of months ago on an examination. My PSA level is below 1 and always has been. Had an MRI which was inconclusive. Biopsy picked up a cancer all though very small contained in the Prostate. I’m now on active monitoring and a trial drug which is supposed to shrink the prostate & the cancer. I now get regular psa checks & MRI’s to monitor it. There are quite a few options for treatment now, i’m not wanting to go through the surgery side yet as the side effects, incontinence, infections etc are too frequent and if i can delay it for a few years all the better. It’s quite possible the cancer has been sat there dormant for years and never picked up. My dad had prostate cancer hence the regular checks. I would recommend every bloke over 40 gets checked regularly.
Graham. Sorry to hear this. Glad it has been picked up early and that you have plenty of options. All the best
Had a full set of blood tests done last week and today had a call from the doctor to make a nurses appointment... no urgency though when I did call so going back on 2nd July. Resisting the urge to google non- urgent blood test problems ...
@Pedro del monkeybike i hope your treatment goes well and you make a full recovery x @Gooders hope all goes well without the need for surgery @Belly hope it’s just a routine follow up
Just been for my 8 of 20 zaps at Clatterbridge hospital Wirral, a major cancer care centre. They are brilliant .Unfortunately tonight there was a regional power cut so , a very unusual wait of 2 hours before everything cancelled. All done brilliantly. You meet the same folk over a 3 week period and have very amusing times. I am a 10 minute drive away from the hospital, 2 blokes live in the IOM and fly over Monday, stay b&b and fly back Friday. Felt sorry for an ( older than me ) chap, lovely Irish bloke had arranged a party for tomorrow night as his treatment should have ended but for the power failure. Anyway he invited 6 of his fellow “ pilgrims “ to his rearranged party and is putting the 2 IOM travellers up in his house ( appears rather grand ). A bit of waffle but there are nice folk around. I would normally decline as I am a bit reclusive…but I’ m going.
The anomaly was an uneven lumpy feel picked up by the doctor on examination. The examination has its limitations though as only part of the prostate can be reached that way. MRI is the only way to see the whole prostate.
Just a cholesterol reading a touch high and pre-diabetic... looks like the time of eating what I want when I want is over ...
Just completed my 20 sessions of radio therapy. 5 days a week for 4 weeks. No major issues. Weight gain which is normal. At the start of the medication I thought ok I’ ll go on the Moseley diet ( before he sadly went missing ) . Lost over half a stone easily in 10:days. Got told off by the radiographer as the weight loss meant the line up tattoos they give you at the outset would need re- alignment. I was told to go and drink some beer and have a couple of take - aways pronto. Happy to do what the doctor ordered !
Saddened to hear about Bill Arthur passing away after first being diagnosed in 2011. . Great RL reporter/commentator/pundit. Sadly missed RIP Bill Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Quick summary of my recent experience: PSA was very slightly high so GP gave me examination, found a lump and referred me for MRI scan. Hospital urologist gave me a cursory examination, couldn’t find anything so requested another PSA. Had sex and did two fitness classes (not simultaneously) prior to second PSA test to bump the results up a bit. This time MRI was performed and tumour identified. Biopsy confirmed cancer. Prostate removed by robotic radical prostatectomy last week. As others have said NHS was excellent. FOR THOSE WITH A PROSTATE - GET THAT PSA TEST DONE NOW!
I havnt had a test yet, but one booked for next month , got to say though that despite being regularly advised to get a test , particulaarly if a family member has got prostate cancer. via many Radio stations and GB News chanel advertisements, my doctors made it somewhat difficult to get a test booked. Phoned the non appopintment line , generally used to arrange blood tests, they wouldnt give me an appointment unless a saw a doctor, two hours on phone and receptionist made it difficult for me to get even a telphone call from the doctor to enable a test be booked, five hours later doctor asked why i needed a test, i advised her of TV and radio adverts saying to get one, my brother 74 years old had prostste cancer cured ten years ago , now sadly returnd so me at 63 thought good idea to have a test, responce from doctor "well you only get one of several results either a false positive or a false negative or a genuine negative or genuine positive so the tests done realy mean much". i persevered and got an appointment for a test . Not a very good attitude from the doctor in light of what is probably a very expensive advertisement campaign and myself being the ideal target for that campaign??
Getting through the front door seems to be the hardest bit. All I can suggest is that you maximise your chances in any way you can. I think that how @Sydney got past the doorkeeper should be used by as many people as possible. My last check was Jan this year, I am absolutely intending to get at least a PSA test every year, and if I need to do a five k run and a jerkoff to get to an MRI then that's what I'll do.
