Ahh. I did wonder if it was splined, but they're so caked in crap I couldn't tell.
I've more than likely rounded them off now, but ill give the spline bit a go. before I get the drill out. cheers bud.

 

Nah, you won't have rounded them off... they're not like allen bolts

 

Just out of interest. If you look in the pic, the 2 lower bolt have a slot through them. Any idea what it's for?

 

Someone modified them so they could use a big flat bladed screwdriver...?

 

And it's off!

Easy with the right tool, and less alcohol in my system.

 

What's next??

 

Stripping everything off, then split the case and see what I have.

 

Hydraulic lifters. Is that standard on a CB engine?

 

What's std about that engine??

 

Ha ha. Nothing I spose! It's stamped with the initials JCS. Does that mean anything to you?

 

Well it's off for a re-read of Tom Wilson. Case is split all the way round except here.

Any ideas?

Hmm. It does feel solid, as if its a nut. But buggered if I could find it! Book says 20 nuts, I have 22 on the bench lol.
Lost my head in the end and had to walk away before I done something silly.

Sorry. Not sure which one you mean. Heads scrambled at the mo. do you have a close up pic of the area it's in?

 

Aha. Just had a quick look with a torch and I think I know the one you mean. In between the lifters just above the sump. The little **** is still there! oops
