  1. Just been looking at a few parts ill be needing. Main one at the moment is a 71mm stroke crank. The only one I've found is on VWHeritage. It's a scat one and the price is £1900!
Is this the only place I can get one, as that price just seems horrendous to me?

  2. prices do vary from place to place... I've only got 66s on the shelf at the moment

I can also get them from the states, but price wise it'd probably work out about the same as the one from coolair!! :)

  3. Nice one Paul. I didn't realise a stock 2lt crank was 71mm stroke, so hadn't looked at those. :D

  4. doooofus :p ;) :D

    17/1800 - 66mm
    2l - 71mm

  5. Yeah. I found some from the states but didn't fancy getting one, as could be difficult to sort out if the was a problem with it.

  6. Are you just doing a 2l/2056 build?

  7. Lol! That's why I've called it project NUMPTYNESS :D

  8. Trick with that is know which company to use!! I only use one place for stroker cranks... was gonna drop him an email see if I could do a swap for all my old cranks for a shiny new one!! ;)

  9. Umm I think so?

  10. lol :D

    what parts have you got?

  11. I have an1800 case and a crank which I assume is 1800 as well. I have one 1800 head and one 1700 head, but will be getting another 1800 eventually.
Aren't all stock cases the same? Or would I be better off getting a 2lt as a base?

  12. Reading my last post back I realise what you mean by a 2lt/2056 build. That would give me some of the parts I need already. So no, I'm doing a 1800/1700-2056! Lol
Although I do have a 2lt in the van at the moment........hmmm

  13. Ooooh...lovely!

  14. Ok, another update!
    I have a 2lt on its way soon! :D

  15. Lol. Which bits lovely? :)

  16. engine or crank?

    A mini lesson on type 4s... :D

All cases are the same, apart from some minor differences that I won't go into
    17/1800 cranks have a 66mm stroke
    2l cranks have a 71mm stroke
17/1800 rods are different to 2l rods
1700 heads have the same size inlets, but bigger exhaust valves to 2l heads (unless they're porsche 2l heads - 42x36 - holy grail for bolt on performace)
1800 heads have bigger inlets and exhaust valves than 2l heads, but the same size inlets as 1700 heads

    That's the basic essentials

  17. Thanks for the lesson, that's cleared up a few things for me. :)
The new engine is a 2lt short block.

  18. no problem

And excellent work on scoring another block!! :)

    Paul,

‘1700 heads have the same size inlets, but bigger exhaust valves to 2l heads’
‘1800 heads have bigger inlets and exhaust valves than 2l heads, but the same size inlets as 1700 heads.’

If 1700 inlet valves are the same as 2.0 but 1800 inlets are larger than 2.0 how can 1800 inlets be the same as 1700?

I thought 1700 heads had 39.3mm intake valves and 33mm exhaust valves, 1800 (with carbs) had 41mm intake and 34mm exhaust and the 2.0 had 37.5mm intake and 33mm exhaust.

The 1800 heads on my 2.0 definitely have 41mm intake and 34mm exhaust valves.
