Yes, I’ve tried tapping and hitting. It worked once, but died again after about 100yds. Now nothing.

Take the black cap off the end of the fuel pump and clean the points, it’s an SU pump!

If it's a new aftermarket one it may well have a pile of cheap electronics in it

The one, short term, advantage of the clear pipe is that you can see whether there are lots of bubbles in the fuel when the pump is running. As it's a lifter pump it is very sensitive to leaks on the inlet side between the tank and the pump. Also, as with many older cars, there may be junk blocking the pipe, pick up or inline filter

  7. Bugger...:(

On the bright(-ish) side it`s a very simple swap ...
If it`s a genuine SU you`ll hear it start clicking when you turn the ignition on and gradually slowing down as it fills up the float bowl , no clicky means cheapy repro or it did when i was scooting around in mi old MGBs.
Have faith , it might not seem so at the moment but you`ll get there

So two pumps have died in the same manner, in a short space of time… have you tried disconnecting the pipe that goes to the carb, putting it in a milk bottle or similar, and seeing what happens when you turn the ignition on?

So the nice AA man had a bigger hammer than me, and after some serious tapping, we’re up and running again.
He also wondered if the positive feed to the pump was touching the bodywork, and so has bent the wire away.
    We’re home.
I’ve googled genuine fuel pumps and they certainly look different to the one on Henry, so maybe it is an aftermarket one?
I think I was charged £30 for it, so that would seem fairly conclusive to me.

I have packed a hammer, and I’m going for another (short) run.

Elimination is your besty-est friend , another question would be did yer maun actually fit a replacement after the first failure or just flush it out ??
SUs have a filter in the banjo if i remember ??

EDIT , just seen the original pic and it`s plumbed in whereas mine was on fuel hose so i`m probably wrong ...

This weekend’s dodgy fuel pump looks different to the one that failed last weekend, so there was definitely replacement made.
I tend to think that they may both be repro because I was only charged £30…. I’ll do some research, and see about genuine rebuildable ones.

At least it looks good on the side of the road… I hope you carry a tartan blanket, and whicker basket for impromptu picnics

The genuine Burlen SU ones are about £150 and out of stock from Burlen, although some resellers may have one.

How was the additional short drive Sarah....I hope it went well?

All fine, started well, no problems at all.
Still not running 100% perfect, but possibly the carb needs a tweek or may just be 'running in' issues... the AA man said how nice the engine sounded, but thought that the tappets might be slightly tight (can you really hear that?!)
I'll go for another short test run tomorrow.
If all is fine then, I'll drive to work this week and clock up my first 100 miles so that the head can be torqued again and the tappets checked.

    It'll all be fine. Right?!!!

I did have a quick google whilst I was waiting for the kind AA man... there seemed to be a few genuine ones for sale on ebay and also from ESM, but now I know to look out for 'Burlen' I'll do some proper searching. Thanks :)

Sorry to hear Henry is playing up despite the affection and £ you’ve lavished on him.

Just got to him running as good as he looks ;)

I’m sure it will be worth it.
