house moving etiquette?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by rickyrooo1, Jan 19, 2015.

  1. We moved the caravan in the garden 4 days before signing ,the old bloke who sold us the property came round ,he could not speak English and I could not speak French ,so i don`t know if he was bothered....:p

The actual signing the solicitor [notaire]said I`d give you a key but you have no door ....

Taking light bulbs and stuff would be a bridge to far for me...

we're leaving everything including ceiling fans and fancy lighting, even leaving a double range cooker as it wouldn't fit in new place and that has built in anyway and they are leaving it so we weren't fussed, but yes i was amazed when you had to fill a contents form out and tick if you were leaving bulbs and suchlike! mental! just taking possessions really, biggest items are sofa, bed, fridge, washer, drier and kitchen table and welsh dresser, no wardrobes as they're built in, both sheds staying as well.
Gonna get work van this weekend and clear both sheds plus any outside junk i can so it's only the house to do and most of that is packed anyway, should be ok just would have liked a saturday move, i'm sure i moved in on a saturday but it was 21 and 1/2 years ago, 2 deckchairs and a 14 inch telly plus the bed from my moms house and a few clothes didn't take much doing, remember having a sheet up the window as i had no curtains................. happy days.

  4. Your solicitor will tell you its for certainty, but then if you move in and the vendor has removed the things they said they would leave then they will then tell you that given the monetary value there is generally no point pursuing this as the legal costs of doing so are disproportional to the value/cost.

21 years ago, sounds like you were at the bottom of the chain so you could complete and then move the following day if that suited you, which it obviously did.

Don't mention moving to me. I've been in the process for 7 months now. It's a 3 person chain. Should have been the simplist move in the world. Nope. Tenant needed re homing at the house I'm buying and my buyers solicitors are dorks. Barry resides in the new Majorhangover campsite. And both estate agents have had epic rants from me both as e mails and in phone calls.

On the up side my solicitor is amazing. Friend of a friend and such a scream to talk to talk to. She had me sorted and ready to go since November. It's all the others that have delayed it. However we are now close to pulling out.

And all this stress and limbo so I can give Barry and Roberto their own bedroom. Oh yes and get a doggy. Don't ask me about my visit to Battersea dogs home. Tissues at the ready.

I had good news today. We should be moving on 5th February. Contracts should be signed by Friday. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I was told we are at a place we should have been at 8 weeks ago!!
So hopefully Barry will be coming home and hopefully the Majorhangovers haven't mentally damaged their foster bus too much. That @MrsMajorhangover cab be a nasty one I tell you. Don't be fooled by the cat loving exterior.

  9. I only wish I was at this stage. We've sold our place, but still looking for somewhere to move to that isn't on a flood plain, or next to a primary school, or at the bottom of playing fields of a major secondary school, or has an Aldi at the bottom of the garden, or has Virgin Pendolino trains going past the bottom of the garden, or is near the proposed HS2 route, or has a new 450 house development at the bottom of the garden, or is on a coal mine  ........... at this rate we will be living with the inlaws for a while because I don't want to lose the sale on our house as they are chain-free first-time buyers.

we have both said with all the "luck" we've had we won't belive we've moved until we're in the new place flagged out on the sofa! i'vesigned all contracts to buy and sell now and just await the date...... @baybirmingham i'd seriously be tempted on a move to inlaws or rented if you can, it would be safe to not lose the sale etc and less stressful to just buy later.

  11. That is good innit...:D

My mate lived over the road to a new tesco ,before he had to travel 5 miles to any shop by bus/bike, he gained 5 stone within the first two years the store opened ,i saw a picture of him recently [fb]and he is the size of a house now....

I don't think having a day off for such a big thing as a house move is too bad. If you hire a big van for the day you can pack it up and your stuff will be in the dry until the completion goes through.

We moved recently but had been living 1 1/2 miles away at my partners mums house so could take as long to move as we wanted :) we did it over a couple of days with help from family (I had hurt my shoulder again so wasn't allowed to lift anything!)

We have also just sold a rental house that was empty. The purchaser was a first time buyer and due to fairly rubbish solicitors on both sides it took about 5 months  All of which we were paying a mortgage and council tax on. We let the guy in before the money had gone in, tho I was a bit worried that if anything went horribly wrong the house was legally still our responsibility until completion.

We did pull out of the first house we put an offer on as after 9 months the vendors still hadn't found their dream house! :)

If the same deal is available it could be a quick re offer, if not you could be waiting a while for new applications to go through!
