house moving etiquette?

  1. If you can Rick, put stuff like your shed stuff in storage (some do 3 months half price and cheap deals) or a mates garage, it really cuts down on the amount of moving and the stress on the day.

That said, I did that and its still there 4 months on.

  3. Whether you get a removal gang or friends to help you shift boxes, my top tip is coloured stickers on each and every box and item of furniture (multiple times on some things), then putting a piece of paper coloured in each colour on the doors of the rooms in the new house, and telling them to match the colours! Far easier than everyone having to stop you and ask you what goes where for every box. :)
For extra helpfulness, write on each coloured piece of paper the name of the room in thick black/visible pen - so if anyone does ask about anything you can just shout Bedroom 2 (or whatever) and leave them to it. I've known one truly anal person who also drew colour-coded maps of the new house and stuck them beside the front door, the stairs, the landing, but I've never gone quite that far!

Also, pack one box of essentials that you want to use immediately you move in and move this in FIRST - a kettle, mugs, teaspoons, sugar, tea, coffee, plates, cutlery and food (snacks/takeaway menus) to feed the volunteers goes a long way to helping the process along :) (add light bulbs, a hand towel and toilet paper to this box as well as I would never count on there being any there already)

i have packed loads, don't get me wrong it's all "good to go" within reason apart from the racking and stuff in the sheds that simply can't be taken down until it's ready to go, the loft is packed and majority of stuff, we seem to have deviated from the original thing i asked about moving on a weekend really. i havd another thought rather than hire a van if i can't get a work one i might speak to one of our subby couriers and see if they will do it. for all i know i'm worrying about nothing.

Unless you have very understanding people my story is normal
You can not enter the one you are buying until the money is transferred and the people buying yours will be inching to get in yours so they can unpack
If you are doing more than one trip they may let you put your stuff in the garden before changeover while you go back and get the rest if not you will have to leave it on the street and hope its not raining

what you have to rember is everyone's in the same boat they have to be out of theirs in one hit so they will want to get in their new one as soon as posable

I would be surprised if you could move at the weekend as the banks are not open to transfer money

People have read that he is moving THIS FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!

I'm guessing an upside is that you only have 4 days in which to poop yourself.

I'd phone the people moving in and see what their plans are - given that you only had it confirmed today, they might be flexible in their plans.

  18. ive just peed myself laughing then, ask betty to tell about one of my roof rack trips up here

I've not read all the other replies, but the house is still yours until "completion". Exchange and complete can be the same day or months apart, you don't hand over your keys until you have the money in your bank. Once you have exchanged contracts it's considered safe to pack all your gear in the van ready for the move, if your buyer pulls out after exchange you get 10% of the sale value if you pursue them for it. The whole exchange and complete on the same day puts incredible pressure on the whole deal, you have to be ready to go at a moments notice but have no recompense should someone in the chain change their mind....it's total insanity.

    Good luck anyway!

I was a bit soft when we moved here. The seller asked me if he could leave his 6' fish tank, light and filter going for a few days while he got a stand set up in his new house. I couldn't imagine trying to move house and about 30 big cichlids at the same time so I agreed, thinking we'd only have to work round it for a couple of days. When we moved in (on Christmas Eve) with Jan 4 months pregnant I discovered that he'd left the contents of his garage as well.

He needed call after call to finally get organised enough to collect his stuff on the 3rd January. He came round and took the tank and fish and asked if he could leave the garage stuff for another day or two.

I'd had enough by then and told him that it all goes today or I'll get a clearance firm to get shot of it and he would pay the bill.

Along with divorce and a death in the family moving house is right up there in the stress stakes.
