The government tried around 8 or 9 years ago with the Home Information Packs - then the surveyor's society and other 'interested parties' (the ones that would loose out as you would only need one survey, carried out by the seller using an independent surveyor for example) all came piling in with 'you wouldn't buy a car from that the seller gave you all the information on' and it was canned.

we were homeless for 4 hours when we moved

The money was paid to us around 11am and we had the new people kicking us out as it was now their house
Our bank/solicitors did not transfer the money for the new house until 3pm, leaving us sat outside with all our stuff knowing if the money did not go in by 4 we would be waiting until Monday

    that sounds a bit grim.........
the naivety on my part is because i've moved once in 21 years, out of my bedroom to this house so i didn't have hardly anything to move, moving all my stuff in "an afternoon" will not be possible.

  4. Have you set up the postal redirection yet ricky?

Try harder, pack up non essentials now, big furniture into big van on the day, clothes and kitchen cupboards food plates the day before, fish n chip tea on the move day , put kettle tea bags etc somewhere you can find um easy when you move in and all you bedding, sort the rest Saturday/ Sunday , it's hard work you gotta run round like a loon and work your nuts off, I used to love moving house when I was young , new house to find treasure in the loft and under the floorboards, new neighbours friends etc

Rationalise them, big skip get shut of the junk and box the rest, if my mrs was in charge of moving/packing it would take weeks so I'm in charge and it only take a day or 2, up very early(5am) bed very late (1-2am) no chance of doing it on your own in a working 8hr day

sounds like hard work, i don't tend to do that, i think i'll have to wing it a bit. I'm more gutted i might have to pay for a van....can only have work one on a weekend.

  10. scaree init rick , ive still got my stuff littered all over southern england . Get crates n plastic boxes with lids for stuff you dont want to get wet n start filling , you can then leave outside if push comes to shove . Golly i took about six weeks ta sort n plan mine .

  11. I don't envy you at all, moving house should be exciting but in our experience it's one of the worst things ever! Sort out and pack as much stuff as you can in advance so that by moving day you are only left with the bare essentials to pack into boxes. Good luck!
Oh yeah don't forget to drain any hot water you have in the tank into buckets and take with you. You've paid to heat it up so it's yours;)

  12. Your of the age where you should be paying for a complete removal services ... the one where they come in and pack the lots into boxes for you then put it into their nice lorry and then move it into the new house putting the boxes into the rooms you direct them to. Now I wouldn't do it any other way.

  13. ^this. House move is the perfect opportunity for a bit of life laundry. If you haven't used it for two years, you don't need it. Chuck it.

I packed myself last time but paid a removal company to shift it.
I'd definitely do the same again as they really know what they're doing!

It took four guys 2½ days to pack our stuff into a 60 cubic metre truck, then another 2 days to unpack at the other end. Presumably you don’t have any furniture if you only have a van and don’t even want to take a day away from work.

Good luck with the move; if you’re like me you’ll be a bit sad leaving a place where you brought up your kids and that has been your home for a number of years, even if where you’re going is much better.

of course i have furniture but there are no wardrobes to move so that saves a load, plus we're only moving about 10 miles so i was thinking of 2 or 3 trips.

  17. Don't forget to leave a haddock under the floorboards

  18. The guys who came and did our last move were brilliant, we moved on the Friday but they turned up on Wednesday and spent two days packing. On the day of the move we got the keys at 2.30 pm and were in with the boxes all in the right rooms by 6.00 pm. As it was a local firm and they were also moving the people into the house we were selling we had 6 guys shift the stuff into our new house. We did have a full big removal van full of everything including the garden furniture and contents of garage.

  20. Doesn't really matter how far you're moving. Unfortunately it's a bit naive to think that you'll be able to call the shots with regards to timings and how long it takes you to move yourself and your stuff to your new place. My advice is get some quotes from reputable removal firms. They can either pack for you, or supply boxes for you to pack. Don't leave anything other than the essentials for the completion day. It helps to number each boxand list what's in each box.
Good luck. It will probably get stressful, don't make any reasons for it to be more difficult than it needs to be.
