  2. Perfect that will definitely help me when I attempt to fix mine in place.

    Thanks so much

This just fell out.. bit of a crack but your welcome to it..

  4. That is very kind, but I'd have to remove the gauge to fit it and I've decided not to risk doing that, as I'll probably make the fuel gauge stop working.

    Thanks though

  5. Are you past wanting this..?

The big fat grey one should be grey with red stripe but I burnt the last lot through! .. closest I had in the bag.. felt tips out later..

  6. Thanks.

I was hoping to have another look today, but failed.

Hopefully your latest photo will be useful when I have another look at it all.

    Cheers for everything

  7. I hope this isn't famous last words!

Everything is back together and seems to be working.
Fuel gauge does not read when lighting switch turned (for now).
Both indicator instrument dash bulbs now work.
Main Beam indicator instrument bulb now works.
Wipers still work, but I haven't yet found why 'slow' speed isn't working (it hasn't for 16 years) - I quit before i stopped wipers from working at all.
Instrument panel re fitted, thanks to some clip tips on the Samba!
    Fuse board re fitted.
Everything still working, but not put any mileage on yet.

This messing about started because a fuse melted.
Big red wire on the wrong side of the fuse board!
Other stuff I looked at was because @snotty kept telling me things weren't right.
Discovered the lighting switch feed was also on the wrong side of the fuse box.
Fingers crossed for my fuel gauge wiring issue on the back of the instrument panel.

  8. What I've learnt:
I've got a much better understanding of the bus wiring now (Printed wiring diagrams and current flow diagrams).
Made a detailed list of which coloured wires go to each fuse, some understanding of unfused and fused side of the fuse box.
I know what 'items' are on each fuse/circuit.
Took photos of dash instrument wiring, how my extra gauges are wired & have a better understanding of how my wiring differs from standard.
I have some understanding of unfused and fused sides of the fuse box now.

  9. What I did/attempted:
Fuel gauge Earth G - Seems I did have the brown/red disc the other side of the terminal, but is still moves around.
Tried taping it up, but it made it worse than before: the fuel gauge 'read' when side lights put on lighting switch dimmer knob turned.
Removed the tape and 'wedged' it in without anything - fuel gauge does not (currently) read when lighting switch knob moved.

Felt pleased with myself for getting an indicator dash bulb working.
Felt an idiot for breaking a working side light indicator bulb.
New bits arrived, replaced main beam indicator bulb and holder, sorted side light warning bulb.

Tried to find why wipers don't work on slow, spend ages poking wires and checking wires were secure in connector boxes.
For an amateur the wiper motor is not easy to get at, even with the glovebox and instrument panel removed.
Would have been easier to see the wiring if the stereo wasn't in.
Decided to quit before I broke anything else.

Put instrument panel back in, leaving glovebox out until i've done a few trips.
    Tested everything.
    Refitted fuse box.
    Tested everything.

Thanks to all those who have helped.
I'm more confident to attempt some basic stuff with the 'electrics' now.
My lists, diagrams & photos will hopefully make it easier to find and sort problems on the road, even if i just provide them to the experts.

  10. Refitting the instrument panel clips was made easier thanks to @BayCreamPuff over on the samba

They are spring clips. It's pretty easy and definitely doesn't require sticking your hand up under the dash.

Pull out the instrument panel. Attach the clips with the rounded part pointed up on the top and down on the bottom. you can leave the bottom ones a tiny bit loose.

Push instrument panel back into the hole on the dash. It will snap right into place. Tighten the bottom screws.

  11. Well, I was right, with some stuff ;)

Wiper motor: if you can get to it, test it directly. Disconnect from switch wiring, dab +12V on black/yellow, should run fast. Keep your fingers well away from the wiper mech, or it'll bite one off! Put +12V on the black lead - motor should run slowly. If it doesn't, implies that one winding in the motor may be duff.

This assumes your colours are the same as later Bays.

  12. You were right with all stuff.

The main problem im having with the wiper motor is getting to it.

Even with glovebox and instrument panel out I can't even see all the wires connecting to it.

It's only had one speed for years, hasn't caused me too much grief except a sore finger!

    Thanks for your electrical input.

  13. Likely hidden behind the air duct "antlers". Easier access if you take them off. You may have a plug-in connector for the wiper motor, which makes things a bit easier.

  14. Save that for another time I think

  15. And taking the radio out so one can see the motor better will help enormously. To be honest though I don't envy anyone facing that after looking at the same thing the other day and I had everything out except the antlers (which have to come out anyway cos one of em is cracked).

  16. I think it's a crossdresser like ours so should have a 4 way block tucked away being your dash unit just follow the wires from the wiper, it's not far.

The wiper wires just pull out . I think it's Black/grey live with the ignition on (@snotty ?) Make a little jump lead and connect on to black and black/yellow as above to see if connetion to motor are ok.

Obviously only once over the tauma of playing with wires once already has gone.. it always worries me..... something else always seems to get loose when you touch anything!

  17. I'm in no rush to get stuck into any more wiring for a while.

  18. Yeah there is no chance I'm attempting to take the stereo out!

    Check out the stereo wiring

  19. No sweat. Just side snip the tie wraps, unfurl the mess, take some photos and make some notes. You’ll find that those wires are probably on quick connects and/or bullet connectors, so should be easy to join back together if you made a note where everything goes.

  20. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

When I wanted to change my wiper assembly I took out the windscreen and dash top. It's a doddle then.
