Makes you laugh dont it . Press have been baying for a reversal from the moment it was announced. Now its reversed its called "a humiliating u turn"
Do the press recon the money will now go to the poorer masses , not a chance , it will still go to the megga rich via some other unannounced scheme.

Indeed, when you're giving money away like that you have to have one outrageous bit for everyone to focus on that you can pull back and look like you're listening to public opinion. I notice they decided not to do the planned corporation tax increase from 19% to 25% among other things. There's bound to be more.

  5. The 5% reduction in tax from 45% to 40% does anyone know how much in overall terms it would have cost in terms of pound notes?

It’s so blatantly obvious the government are doing deals for their mates in high finance, the big fuel companies and themselves. Politics is like a computer game now!

Indeed, what happened to the removal of 5 percent VAT on domestic fuel bills she spoke if when canvasing . Not a word on that since she came to be PM, either by her or the press

I read it was good for an average £9k gain for high rste tax payers, can't remember exactly how many of them thete are but it was hundreds of thousanfs of them. Compared to the £70 boggo tax rate payers would get.

As daft as that sounds it’s all we’ve got in response we’re so tied into the system that any change effects us all almost directly. Russia invades the Ukraine oil gas and wheat prices soar instantaneously regardless of the fact we only rely on 4% of Russian gas and can easily be self sufficient in wheat, inflation immediately goes up as a result, the government step in with a ( help the poor package ) the pound drops ( because they’re helping themselves to a tax cut ) then the banks hike up interest rates and buy government bonds, today the chancellor has suddenly done a u turn and the pound rises ( lots of people getting richer on the back of that one ) and the only people suffering are?

They don't even buy the bonds, they gamble on futures.

  12. I got two loads of washing on the line today, towels seemed pretty dry by lunchtime.

@Zed I read it was one billion quid put in perspective the air craft carriers cost £7.6 bn each! The sentiment was definitely wrong but I am also not persuaded that a government should u turn based on the popular view.

Quite right, can't have government reflecting majority public opinion, that would be democracy!
I suspect it's no u turn, just part of a pre-planned strategy as I mentioned.

My point is it’s knife edge stuff this running the country like a business especially a small country like ours and anyone coming into govern us no matter which side you’re on they need to be concise in their judgement and decisions because gone are the days of getting away with gung ho cabinet decisions and ill thought out budgets the banks and high finance have too much direct influence now!

  15. Doesn't it then become mob rule. U think they have a strategy?

Strategy, yes, add something the papers and public will view as outrageous in the circumstances, pull that and look like you care while getting away with everything else you planned without any brouhaha. Tried and tested.

In the olden days they'd get some expendable back bencher to announce some unpalatable racist/sexist/ageist soundbite to cover an unpopular policy announcement, but they've run out of willing candidates and all that stuff gets you sacked in these times.

  17. One way of looking at it.

Politics innit, it's a game - not the actual politics, but the manipulation of information relating to it.
As the old saying goes, "to understand a politician, ask yourself - Why is this lying *** lying to me?"

I think that these tactics were employed in the past. I think the current decisions however smack of arrogance and incompetence
Their failure to have the OBR run a check before announcement is incredible. Also it appears that cabinet was not consulted…you can’t have collective responsibility if there is no collective. Under “normal “ circumstances” Kwasi would be out, now however is internal fire fighting, putting out fires that have been lit by themselves.
