I know this has been talked about before but I’ve Just had an email from British Gas saying my direct debit payment is going to be £345 per month from next month, we have a 3 bedroom detached house and there’s me, Mrs Baz, Holly and my son when he’s home from university, I just wanted to put it out there because I’ve no idea what other families are paying

  2. I live in a three bed semi. Me, Mrs Bucket, 24 yr old son and 21 yr old son when he’s back from uni.

I’m currently paying £207 dual fuel. They are pestering me to up it to £245 which I refuse to do. This is down from the £545 they tried on me a few weeks ago. Good luck getting out of that two year fixed if I’d been mug enough to agree to it. They are doing this as they predict/estimate that’s what I might use. I’m not letting them increase it by a penny. If I owe them money I will pay them for what I’ve used. You don’t apply this logic to anything else. I don’t give Tesco £200 a month up front on the off chance that I might be a bit more hungry this month.

If there is a shortfall, and that’s a big if, then I will pay the balance.

..hmm £345 x 12 gives over £4140 a year!!!..the energy price cap is set at £2500..so it looks like they want to rip you off and get your money for free to make even more money..onece my fixed ends in March I go variable even if will be paying more I only pay for what I use..they will NOT have my money for nothing…btw I know it all depands on individual circumstances so you probably use more energy then average but still…

That would have covered my gas/elec/solid fuel bill for the whole of last year. Small living for the win!

it beggars belief that anyone pays their power company money in advance by means of a direct debit , why would you do it ? the only way is to be on a monthly bill and pay when it arrives. that way when the energy company goes bust they dont take your money with them , you dont have a large three monthly bill to pay .
It has just taken me 11 months to get what was a £750 credit back from EON , the cheque i recieved was for £525 , the money was for my neighbour who passed away last November. EON have been taking out the standing charges each month for dual fuel despite me requesting the account be closed an the money refunded. in essence thay have taken over 200 pounds for nothing other than ignoring my request to close the account. Never be in credit with the power comapany as it becomes your problem , if you are in debt to them , then its their problem.

  9. There is no price cap, the £2500 figure is a capped energy rate, based on average consumption figure. Some people will pay less, some more, depending on how much they use.

  10. This insane price increase has made me address how much energy I was probably wasting through laziness and poor insulation. Assuming the prices ever return to a more “normal” level and i honesty don’t think they will. It would be interesting to see how little I could actually be spending.

  11. You beat me to it. The £2,500 is a figure bandied about as that for the average house, what the average house looks like I have no idea.

I suspect we will pay a fair bit more. @Barry Haynes the only way to work out if it is appropriate amount is to check your annual usage and then apply the new rates and daily charge and see what that equates to on a monthly basis.

Dont forget to do your meeting readings today if you didn't yesterday to make sure you pay the lower rate for the gas electric you actually used as opposed to the supplier apportioning it which may be in their favour.

This one of my bad news reporting rants. There is no max amount it’s just something the news has created

It’s the price per unit and the amount of standing charge has been capped.

Just been sorting exactly this for my elderly parents. The robbers have been taking £250 a month off him he only has a small flat he’s been in credit by hundreds for years and they have still pushed his direct debit up by £100. They should be brought to book.

What I have just done for dad is work out his daily/ weekly/ yearly usage and doubled it then divided by 12 and it’s nowhere near what they insist he pays so I’ve told them he will pay the minimum and make up any difference in a years time. I bet there isn’t much difference and he won’t have much to settle up, but it will be in his bank not theirs!

I forgot to mention in my original post , that it adds about £25 a year to your fuel bills as they raise the unit price if you dont pay by direct debit . How they get away with that i dont know , but its a cost i dont mind standing knowing they havnt got my money .
