FTFY. Yes, I believe they are "merely" throwing as much of "our" money (future debt) at the obvious conservative supporters as they can before their coming demise. It's shallow behaviour isn't it? At least in the past they might have been slightly embarrassed but we seem to have gone way past that, it's like they know we're all doomed and are having a party because it no longer matters where there is no hope of recovery.

  5. I think the bigger mistake the Tories made was not windfall taxing the energy giants. A few percent more tax on them would not have harmed them at all and we wouldn't need to keep borrowing. Clearly the energy giants have the power over the Tories.

  6. I read that someone earning 1 million (and there are lots of those) would save £55,000 per year

Yes, when people with income over say £1m are talked about , they don’t have a salary or wage, ……they receive “ compensation”.. poor dears.

  10. Allegedly one third of uk income tax,
is paid by the one percent of high tax payers .. ?

This may be right. My main bugbear is with companies operating within the UK, employing UK workers ( thus taking advantage of Uk benefits rights etc) using UK roads for their transport etc……yet declaring their profits overseas. This needs to be tackled if eg Boots, Amazon, Starbucks, etc choose to leave ….then let small businesses step in ,pay their taxes here. Oh I so wish for some radical changes.

  12. Years ago my mate knew he was leaving McDonalds, so for weeks before we all got free food. Liz Truss is just doing the same thing. You dont think the tories would be daft enough to actually hang around and try to run the country whilst having to pay for all the furlough money do you? I believe the term used in that there football game is "They are already on the beach" In the same way as the markets price things in, the tory big wigs have priced in the next election loss.

So let’s get this right are you saying we are all going to get free McDonald’s to eat on the beach while wearing big wigs

  15. I understand that the energy giants have offered to pay more tax at this time to help lower energy bills, but the Tories prefer to borrow more money instead, Tories are stupid, they should be kicked out now before they land us in even more financial mess. Truss has a poor track record of reckless decision making, she was the one who gave the water companies permission to discharge raw sewage in our rivers and seas. And who is Kwarteng? What are his credentials? Is he qualified and experienced enough to do the most important job of managing our country's finances? From what we have seen so far, he is incompetent in my opinion.

Meanwhile, my EDF pay as you go electricity bill came yesterday for September usage, £63.82 and I live in a 2 bed detached house. I pay it on the 13th and send the next meter reading end of October. I read the meter each day so I can keep the lid on my usage.

Glad I'm no longer supporting a family with a 10kw shower.
    4x 20 min showers at 40p kwh x 30 days = £160/month just for that!

  18. Be glad your not on heating oil as well
It was nearly a grand for a thousand litres last time we bought it
We go through 2-3 thousand litres a year
Plus coal for the multi fuel burner in the front room
Then the electric bill on top which is hard to keep down because we cook on electric.

It may look idyllic living in the sticks in an old stone cottage but it’s bloody expensive.

Oh and there’s no help from the government this winter for coal or oil users

At one point in our life we lived in a nearly new mid-terrace. The bills were so low we got rebates on the standing charge! So, it is possible. Hopefully your new house will be more like that than your present one.

  20. I reckon with the £400 handout, I will be paying less than last year, plus as a pensioner I will get the £500 winter fuel payment. So I should be warm this winter.
