Does Concorde count as old? so luv that engineered out its face brilliant bird ,and that Spitfire hanging from the ceiling of Glasgow museum and art gallery<is ACE !and was it a German one that the guns were timed to fire between the blades? <yikes!
In the mid-80s, I went round the BA hangers with my sis (unthinkable these days). There were two Concordes in...they looked like big seagulls, with their droopy noses.
Hey Snotty , did you ever see them take off from Heathrow in the evening? when i worked there , the noise ,the afterburners , and as they hit the clouds the afterburners would be switched off and off that fabio bird would go ,was great (imo) to watch, do you mean your sis perhaps worked there? and said "wanna see the Concordes" lets walk about and have a look ? its funny (if that was the case then) the amount of places i got into at Heathrow pre 911 by wearing a high viz and having a Scottish health club membership card on a chain hanging from my /round my neck was a , 2 me, a laff(worrying). It really was wide open.>note: a Scottish health club membership card means i lived past 5 years of age ,which would have been obvious had any security dude bother to check, but (no joke) a lot of them were fast asleep(double shifting)
Sis worked for BA (still does) and in those days if you were with a member of BA staff, you could just wander around if you had a word with the maintenance supervisor. I nearly ended my days inside a 747 that had the interior completely stripped - christ, they're big, like a small branch of Sainsburys with wings - and they'd left all the floor hatches open. I nearly stepped backwards into one - it's a long way down... Seen Conkers take off many a time, but never at night . Huge engineering achievement, but commercially didn't really make sense from the start, unfortunately.
Love the old ones. Walk past these beauties everyday at work, Merlin, Avon, Spey, Tay to name but a few.
Hi, Yes Rolls-Royce in East Kilbride, Scotland for the last 16+ years. I am new to late bays but hopefully will become a regular. Just purchased a 77 LHD Westfilia Helsinki in need of a fair bit of work. Will do a proper introduction when it's in a better palce. Currently own a nice 911 SC and just sold a Yamaha FJ1200 so air cooled, oil burners are in my DNA. Really enjoying this busy forum and looking forward to asking for help in the near future. Cheers Alan
The old Centurion tank had a Rolls aircraft engine fitted I think that was a Meteor, bit of a sod to change the spark plugs.
Didn't know that, looks like it was developed from a Merlin III which would have been pleasent to sit beside. "Sorry what did you say, didn't quite catch that!!!"
You're could see them at night because the exhaust fishtail glowed red, good tank served all over the world in many different armies, Israel, Egypt and Jordan all at the same time,
If you're looking for a day out & you're near East Kirkby in Lincolnshire this might be worth seeing, 3 Lancasters all on the same day http://www.lincsaviation.co.uk/events/Special-Events/once-in-a-lanc-time-3-lancasters.htm
My father was a flight engineer on these and many years ago I managed to get hold of recording of one landing in a airport so thought it would be a great laugh to set up the hi-fi outside the bathroom when he was in the bath and crank up the volume. (pay back for a rollocking I had for leaving his spanners out all night) Anyway not a reaction came from my father when it was played so thought that was a flop, but asked him a few days later 'did you hear that Lanc landing?' 'yes, it was mis firing on number three' Dad's always have the last word!
I've got this album in my collection, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the R.A.F. Never played it at full volume
Hot off the Press! Bournemouth Airshow will have 2 Lancs flying. The Battle of Britain flight and the Canadians are bring theirs to the UK for 3 weeks
