Maybe I’m just being a fanny I’ll put some oomph in it and see if I can get it or just leave it because this might not even be the exhaust that goes with this engine it’s a spare engine cheers

Mole grips at an angle. One jaw on top flange, one on bottom. Set so the last squeeze to lock them lines the holes up. Funny, it's always that one! Edit. Soz, that won't work with that exhaust flange though you could grind/file a nick on it to get a grip.
Another thought, haven't done this for years but take out the screw you fitted and get the other more awkward one fitted first. Then the last one looks like a better bet for prying, squeezing and access to get the bolt in is better????
Also consider loosening the nuts holding the exhaust to the heat risers both sides and using a "spanish windlass" twisting up a loop of rope by rotating a piece of wood threaded through the loop to pull the pipes together. All that and jumping on it to fit an EMPI exhaust . It would go on if all the clamps and nuts were loose and you attacked it.. .. If you started one side and tightened it up , the other side was miles out. If you leave it loose its only half as many miles out both sides... Once you have started welding things you will soon understand why cheap exhaust systems are such twisty things to fit on an engine...
So gents just when you thought you’d heard the last of me for the day here I go again I “managed” to wrestle the engine off the stand onto a pallet nearly burst my boiler doing it but got it there got the bellhousing onto the engine starter fitted and did the following wiring 12v to coil jumped from back of starter loop from coil to carb solenoid from - side of coil to condenser connected start switch turned engine and nothing a couple of coughs but no real attempt to start took a lead off and put a plug in it turned the engine over and no spark it’s a new coil new condenser new dis cap new rotor new leads and new plugs but no spark at the plug also engine turns over very slowly ?? many ideas PLEASE
Try finding a book called "how to keep your vollswagen alive" really good book very easy to understand mechanical talk. Also the back pages have useful trouble shooting points, it will help you build some knowledge up and if the breakdowns do occur just keep it with you and should help you get going again
First of all check the ignition coil is wired correctly , take all the plugs out then reset the points and get a spark , if you can`t get a spark it`ll probably be points not fitted properly and earthing out - easily done If you still can`t get a spark you`ll need a multimeter .... (and know how to use it ...) If you can get a spark refit the plugs , check the timing and maybe a splash of petrol down the carb - cross your fingers
I’d put my money on the points being fitted incorrectly I removed the dis cap and “teased” the points open and there was no spark there but as I did it the points touched a fixing screw and sparked is that normal? how would I have fitted the points wrongly? The plugs are new only fitted today the engine is on the ground so I’m only putting petrol in the carb would not having a fuel supply pipe on the pump cause air to be drawn in? thanks for your help
If it's turning over slowly... Have you got a full charge on a decent battery? Does the engine turn easily by hand? Have you got sufficiently fat wires going to the starter? Did you check the bush in the bell housing is present and in good Nick? If it's worn the starter will drag. Is the starter a known good one? If you can get it to spin freely, you will likely find a spark magically appears
There`s no easy way of talking somebody through fitting points , just post a GOOD picture of the points fitted and the great unwashed will pull it to pieces Edit - could be the battery as above but you need to check with the plugs out so it spins freely and doesn`t drain the battery . (too much ...)
Hi dubs I’m working jump leads off my truck to the starter and earthing to the body I never checked the bush and the starter is an old one so maybe not great I’ll check these out now cheers
And it has lots of cartoons that you can colour in while waiting for the breakdown service to turn up. Just don’t think it’s a maintenance manual.
I've just been bench testing a starter.. jump leads were not much good. If you can get the leads off the van and bolt them on to a battery and the engine it makes a huge difference in spin speed. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
Right , looking at the two green leads going into the dizzy , is the spade connector earthing out maybe ?? Points are open - are they on the highest point of the cam ??
