Consultation on same-sex marriage - last day to submit your view

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by JenW, Jun 14, 2012.

  1. Today is the last day to submit your view to the government consultation on gay marriage

I was not aware that the consultation would stop taking views after today

If you are going to debate please keep to the subject and do NOT get into slurs

I for one am not certain how it is even a question in today's society - all consenting adults should be allowed to marry - if they are religious they should be able to marry in church if they are atheist as we are they should be allowed to marry without the church's involvement

  3. I don't think the plan is to force religious organisations which carry out marriages to conduct same sex marriages (although I would like to see them do that, religion should not be an excuse for bigotry)

  4. politics/religion/swearing ( ;)) = questionable topics for a forum?

in saying that - I'm in total agreement with you JenW

  5. I completed this survey yesterday. It was a real eye opener as I didnt realise that the proposal will only allow CIVIL marriage. This means that gay people cannot get married using a religious service. So really what is the point? It means that all religious organisations are allowed to continue discriminating against gay people by refusing to perform ceremonies in their churches. They will also be protected by the government as legislation specifically states charges cannot be brought against them.

My partner and I are not religious, we had a civil partnership 3 years ago and were perfectly happy with that. BUT if we were religious we should have the same right as everyone else and be able to have that ceremony conducted before our god.

The annoying thing for me is that most straight couples who marry in church are not even religious they purely choose that venue because it is beautiful and suits to whole white wedding theme!

  12. I must be a little old school on this. Before I start my uncle is gay and is married to a nice bloke.

With that in mind, marriage of same sex couples IMO is fine but if the church says they can't be married under the eyes of the lord then that is their prerogative, the church has always done things that don't necessarily sit right with society.

Oddly though, I don't think same sex couples is right. We were put on this earth to 'copulate and expand', if you read the bible god made man and woman. Not man and man or woman and woman. I just find it strange really but can accept that people are different and want to live their lives how they want.

  14. Considering the terrible things that the church has done to people over the centuries, the way they have manipulated ignorance, I don't get why anyone should even want to go into those places let alone get married there! They, (the church), ostracise people for their homosexuality while protecting paedophilic rapists! But people don't seem to have any trouble separating the reality that is the church from the fantasy of their perfect weddings.

I see it the other way round completely, should the church (guess I'm talking about christians here but..), one of the most callous and bigoted organisations on the face of the planet, be allowed to have any say in this matter whatsoever? They are lucky that people still go through their doors at all! The church, in the long run, will never fully embrace equality and that will be their extinction..

Phew, sorry about that, born again atheists/Jedi/pagan oh I don't know! I'll be glad when us earthlings have got past this part of our evolution...

    Cheers
