Ah, I didn't clock that it had been rebuilt, I'm sure he would have checked that, it's a common enough problem.
It was built by "nobody". I had constant updates, photos, videos of dial gauges and every part that needed changing was changed, including 1st and 2nd gear. He doesn't know why it's sticking (the sleeve??) without looking and he's offered to do it for free. Only he's in Wales and I'm not. He assured me that 1st gets selected several times during the build. I left the box standing vertically and without oil for about 24 months before fitting it, so I'm assuming that's when things got sticky? Hence my hope that it might free off by driving it and getting it warm.
Hmmm, my first and second slipped into gear beautifully before the same gent fixed my 4th and like yours, replaced a lot of other things icluding all the synchro rings. Not so good now. TBH I wouldn't recommend him now other than him being relatively cheap. My 2nd is like your 1st - barely makes it - I think he's got the fork too near 1st, sounds like yours went the other way. If there was a hole I could drill to adjust it I'd be tempted but like you sending it back wouldn't be much fun even though he offered to sort it free.
It might free off after a good churn - hopefully. Hard to believe he wouldn’t have spotted a cracked bracket.
I'm too dumb to know if this is the 1st/2nd fork or the 3rd/4th, but you get the idea. Does you box select 2nd "too easily" Mark?
Kind of feels like I almost have to bend the gearstick to get 2nd where 1st selects not far from neutral. I'm exaggerating but that's roughly how I would describe it. 3rd and 4th are more even. Seems like each gear has two clicks and the second click is barely attainable for my 2nd gear. A bit like adjusting a cab door to my simple mind. I'm glad you posted about this, it's starting to make sense. I wouldn't have noticed 1st being odd if 2nd hadn't been.
Exact description! Only other way round for 1st/2nd in mine. Points to needing the box out to sort it doesn't it.
Or a hole drilling in the side - I've heard of doing this, my mate Rob Parry has done it, but I don't think on a 6-rib. I'm always nervous of letting someone "have another go" when it involves so much effort for me. What if he over did it and it ended up like yours, or vica versa? Have a third guess?
I wouldn’t recommend him either. He’s offered to replace the synchro rings, if I buy them, but I’ve already bought them once. £1,100 plus £500 transport charges (from/to France) and the box is no better than when I sent it to him.
If it comes to it I'll take the box out. I think it's beyond my capability so I'll try and find somebody else to fix it.
At least I have a 4th gear now, but the degradation of 1/2 disappointing. Mine is noticeably easier gear selection after dumping out the synth oil for mineral within a day but I know you don't agree with this and it's too late now anyway.
It's a new thing for him, he wasn't doing it when I had mine fixed and I don't know if he even has the jigs... but he is someone we know, like and trust - that's a good start!
@theBusmonkey - Hi! We met briefly at a TE but you were under a bus at the time so you may not remember. Do you fancy a little job like this? As long as you're not in Wales too!
