  3. Some of the larger ones round here do charge, but certainly not all.

I do drive there myself, as it's a bit far to walk, I probably count as someone taking advantage of the facilities not in my immediate area, I live outside the parish.

On the local news they said its 300 people every weekend and that only 25% of the people are local also the football team said they pay £60 each time to play on the same park

By the sounds of it, its just got too big and regular for the size of the facility's

If, like the football team, they're running on the grass and ripping it up, fair enough. @Beaver, do you mash the grass up? And do you have studs on your running shoes? ;)

  6. Doesnt this all just emphasise the fact the PUBLIC parks arent.

if they are purely for people that live next to them then why do they have a car park.

It is likely that those attending events at the park contribute directly to the local economy

I can understand charging for an event that requires money to be spent to allow it to go ahead at a specific time on a specific day, however parkrun is organised and staffed by volunteers

Why do people object to this? I pay council tax, that goes towards paying for my public park. If people travel there from other towns why would i object. Why do you?

  7. No mashing, no studs.

It's only the finish that's on the grass, the rest is all on the paths around the edge of the park.

So if a certain park charges for parking like ours do then the park makes money and they are happy, as said some parks don't charge and 2oo to 300 people turning up all at once certainly disrupts the local bloke walking his dog and young mum playing with her kids I reckon, The Parkrun company don't charge to join or run but the are making money on the website from selling Parkrun goods and advertising, I Think if no car park money is made then I can't see a problem in paying a pound to the park to keep everybody happy, why should what is a private enterprise make money out of using public parks

Park run is a Not For Profit organisation run, as already said a few times, by volunteers. I would object to paying a quid to use a facility that I have already paid out for, and that, at 9 am on a Saturday morning, disrupts very few other park users ( admittedly I can only speak from PoV of my local Park Run), causes little or no wear and tear to the facility being used and is of direct benefit to the local community.

Parkrun makes money from using parks the park doesn't, this from the bloke who started it

    The money
“In the beginning I funded everything – I went to work, I took half my salary and I put it into parkrun. In the last ten years parkrun has cost in excess of £3m. We got our first sponsorship in 2009 then in 2010 we partnered with Lucozade and Nike. This is a business in every sense of the word, we employ people, we have obligations, we have costs that are quite large and our websites are as professional as most organisations. We do the best we can to make sure this isn’t Mickey Mouse. Now we have relationships with third parties like PruHealth and we get grants from organisations like the London Marathon – we also have a shop where we’re now trying to sell some stuff, but we try to make sure that all of our commercial activities are as low-key as possible so that they don’t invade the trust runners have in parkrun.”

Park run uses technology to enable participants to have their time logged. The chips and hand computers it uses have to be paid for. You could say why don't the runners pay for all this then, but the whole idea of Park run is that it is free, and inclusive, anyone can go. To call it a private enterprise implies business and profits and all that gubbins.

I'm not calling it that, the bloke who started it is, It's a big worldwide company employing loads of people who use public parks to make money, FACT

I know it's a big worldwide company, and I know it makes money on a not for profit basis. But the basic premise is to get ordinary folk, of all shapes n sizes to go for a bit of exercise, and to not have to pay for it. We have already paid to use the facility anyway. I would begrudge my local council 1 extra penny, never mind a pound. There is a principle at stake.

  19. You really dont like it do you you miserable sod that people come together as a comunity to help each other get fit, keep fit and have some comeraderie which is in short supply in todays world. Just cos your not living in yorkshire you dont have to take the tight as a quacks wotsit thing to the extreme to prove a point. Do the runners currently have to pay... No. They dont. Do people get paid to staff the events. No they dont.

Think you and Matty should have a miserable sod competition. To be honest if i put my mind to it id wipe the floor with the pair of you coming from where I do.
