Belly pan conundrum

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by snotty, Jun 1, 2020.

  1. Anyone found they’re short of a couple of captive nut holes in their chassis members for the big centre belly pan?

Grudgingly accepting I may have to get under van and finish the middle bits. Chased out all the captive nuts, but found I was short of two, one on each side. Chassis rails and pan are originals.

    Most mysterious...

  2. I've fastened mine on with large self tappers

Early and late pans are different and I had to cut a few bits off a late one to make it fit early. Perhaps you have an prototype bay pan.

Never quite understood the fixing indifference's ...i have proper threads for bolts which nicely fit on 3 fitments one i leave as just a big gap ( oh a say ) 2 other's self tappers .
I just assumed they were all nice fitting thread holes originally and it's now old and a codged up mixture .

  5. This is the big centre one under the load floor, the original one for the van.

All mounting tabs present, just that two captive nut holes are missing in the chassis rails (also original), one on each side. Odd.

No holes whatsoever for the pans on mine. It's South African and I don't think it ever had any pans? Planning to drill 9mm holes for M6 rivnuts all round for the 3 pans and the pedal pan.

You can bet the one I've bought is for an early!

If it never had them, why fit them now?

Having spent 643gazillion hours scraping, brushing, cleaning and painting every pipe, nook and cranny under there, I figure three similarly treated flattish plates of metal will be easier to keep clean. If they're fitted with stainless bolts and rivnuts, it's nice and easy to remove them if need be. Why wouldn't you want to fit them?

  14. Should lose less heat through the heater pipe as well.

Hadn't thought of that one. Will be lagging the new pipe (yup it's another of those Ann Summers jobs) so with a pan over it, it'll be nice 'n toasty.

Did you know you can buy twin wall insulated corrugated duct for that? I used it on my early. ,
Perhaps you already have it. Fairly stiff (ooh matron), it didn't need s lot of support.

More weight, moisture trap, dirt trap, unnecessary faff fitting them; harder to inspect your cables, ducts, pipes, wiring quickly; added steps to any planned work.

    It’s your van, your shout.

But if it didn’t come with them from factory, I assume it doesn’t actually need them.

I can 100% guarantee I’ve never heard a single story of the horrors hidden under belly pans on buses that don’t have them.

I don’t have any belly pans so.

If you can’t be arsed to fit it properly just give it to me and I will fit it to mine

The two extra bolt holes were for a special M-Code introduced for the Swedish Army.

Basically they would attach a broom head on a frame and use it to clear roads of lemmings ahead of advancing armoured vehicles.
