Auto box

  1. I have a 003 auto gearbox fitted to my van, when reverse gear is selected it seams to clonk in. I have been underneath the van and i noticed if i grab the drive shaft and twist it back and forth that there is a fair bit of play in it and i think that is whats causing the clonking noise when reverse is selected as the gearbox takes up the slack?? Is there any way of adjusting the diff/driveshaft to remove the play?

I would check your mounts, tick over speed and fluid levels first

  3. The CV joints might be the issue but when I changed mine it made no difference. I think on mine it's the gear box mount and have yet to find a replacement. I've got mine packed out with old credit cards.

Could you not grind out/remove the rubber and replace it with polyurethane ?

  5. Yes I think Frost or Eastwood do a kit for this. Just one of those things I've never got round to and/or got put off by the cost. The credit cards have actually made a useful difference.

  6. I drained the old oil from the gearbox, removed and cleaned the sump and strainer, fitted a new gasket and filled with the correct fluid. Now all is well:D no more clonking into gear:) Just goes to show what clean fluid can do.

Did you jut change the oil or the ATF as well?

  8. Sorry, yes i changed both oil and atf .

  9. I've got to do mine, where did you get the oil and fluid from fella?

rickyrooo1 Hanging round like a bad smell

mine is the later auto and does this, i think i'll need to try oil changes, what/where is the other oil?

  11. Just normal sae 80/90 gearbox oil for the diff housing... you only need about 1.5l if memory serves correct!! And for the ATF you want ATF Universal... pop into a motor factors and they'll sort you :)

Rickster... if you look at the box it has 2 sump pans... you'll need to pull them both to drain the fluids... the diff has a 17mm hex plug on the o/s and the atf is refilled through the dipstick tube!!

  12. GL4 would be better, has less corrosive sulphides in it... Can cause havoc with delicate copper in the gearbox over time

  13. The owners manual calls for a GL5 oil to be used. You are correct that it should not be used in a manual gearbox, which should be GL4.

  14. Yes... Maybe I should read the title of the thread first

  15. camper123, Here's a question, my auto gearbox ha two similar gaskets underneath, it's a vacuum model, so is it the same as yours, a 003??
Would this be the same model as yours, 003 321 105 d?

If yours has a vacuum modulator it will be an 003

  17. Cheers Pie, just looking at one for sale and it's only got one cover underneath for oil change and mine has two?
Which I thought was gearbox oil and the other trans fluid?

  18. Mine is a vacuum model aswell forgot to agree on that :)

  19. vac model... one that passed through a while back... I had to make my own sump gaskets for it... thin cork is the way forward!!
