i only ask as i have inherited a quite big garden that was once very well tended and planted with herbacious perenials , a few tree's and laid to lawn . The elderly lady who first bought the house in 1961 was a very keen gardener but in later life il health meant she could not do as much as before so as a consequence the garden began to become neglected , when she was moved to nursing home some tenants were in but instead of gardening they basically gave away a lot of the plants . Luckily when we moved in the garden was so well made i have been able to get it back , but, here are areas where i presume nice plants once were that looks patchy in the middle of the borders etc . Does anyone know about plants and herbacious perenials in particular , i need ideas on what to put in . i will post some pictures of my garden in a while
I am but only food wise. Used to have an allotment and greenhouse etc. No good when it comes to nice looking gardens hehe
Had to give my allotment up past year but had it for two years. I had never grown anything in my life before. It's dead easy and fun but hard work
I have an allotment for the last 12yrs well that is one in the three towns I lived in in them 12yrs. Sorry don't care much for plants with no eating value.
Maintaining a garden, is very much like making love to a beautiful woman.. First of all you have to keep fertilising the area and trimming back any areas of overgrowth
Ok so this is my garden as it is now , i have some idea of the names of plants and we want to keep the same layout, if anyone knows the name of the plants or have some idea of what to plant inthe spaces i would be very grateful These are the gaps if anyone has any suggestions then fire away I still have to sort this border And weed the rockery i do know this is a vw forum , but it is geneal discussionand i also know there are some seriously knowledgable peoplle on here and who knows , someone may be able to help :-
come and see me buddy, i'll sort you out with a load of perennials! the list is endless. go to your local market and pick a few up there. there should be plently about at the moment with good growth on. look to pay about £1.50 -£3.00 a pot for nice 1litre plants. things like lupins, aquilegia, hollyhocks and perennial geraniums are nice. heuchera are lovely low growing evergreens in varying shades of green red and purple.
I'm very much into the sport of extreme gardening. It's a bit like extreme ironing, only the main piece of equipment is one of these: (borrowed from my neighbour) and a can of this: Let your garden grow for several months, then use the strimmer to slash it all back again. There is no better and more satisfying way of gardening than revving the nuts off a petrol strimmer.
if you can get a couple of alstromeria princess lilies, they are lovely. lots of bedding plants about too to put in all your gaps for a splash of summer flower. look at lobelia and marigolds to fill out areas for relatively cheap. petunias too for a wide range of nice bright colours!
no worries buddy have a look at these, an excellent range of books for the novice gardener, http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Flower-Expert-best-selling-flowers/dp/0903505525/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1337447435&sr=8-2 and this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Complete-Garden-Expert-gardening/dp/0903505983/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1337447435&sr=8-5
