A restoration for Iris

  1. Ooo! Looks like the width of the feet may be critical. We are hoping it will fit in between our garage and fence which is about 3 metres wide.

O/S Middle sill welded in over the weekend. Next up some minor repairs to the rear wheel housing.

  3. Hi Jim. Here is a picture of the area we are going to be working in

The near side of the Doka is against the boundary fence.

Do you have much room the other side too? I didn't get measurements today but it doesn't protrude much when rolled so I suspect you'll be ok. I'll try and get measurements in the week for you.

  5. No, the near side is a couple of inches from the fence. Cheers.

A bit of a change from all the chassis work I’ve been doing (it’s not finished yet, but I want to get the O/S bits sorted before I turn my attention to the N/S floor and the delights that the sliding door track and middle sill will offer).

Started grinding the paint off the O/S panel. Found an impressive amount of filler, however the metal underneath is solid.

Drew a straight-line across the panel and committed the cut (I didn’t have to cut quite as high as I originally thought which will save some effort). I’ll come back to this panel once I’ve sorted the B and C pillars.

B pillar condition wasn’t too bad, however the front arches are knackered (which I already knew):

Checked the fit of the B pillar repair against the new arch (it fits better than this picture suggests; the clamps fell off):

And cut the B pillar repair down to size. It still needs a bit of fiddling to get a perfect fit. I’ll then use this to aid me in fabricating the inner bits of the B pillar repair.

More prep on the O/S today.

Cut out the rot on the inside of the B pillar. Most of the rot is isolated to the bulkhead so I shouldn’t have to make too many repair sections (thankfully).

Made the first of a few repair panels I’ll need:

Trimmed down the O/S closing panel and spent a fair while getting the fit right. I joggled the edge on the new panel which gets tucked under the old panel. The panel has the returns like the original either end so I’ll be able to replicate the spot welds joining it to the B pillar.

The outer sill joins the middle sill along its length. What should I do with the bit toward the front of the van where the middle sill stops? (See below) Do I weld a small strip onto the inner sill to bring it to the same height as the middle sill or just clamp to the inner sill directly (that would presumably leave a noticeable step though?)

@zedders any ideas on the above?

It's supposed to be like that. There should be a small step pressed into the inner flange to bring it out level with the middle one where it stops, leaving flat surface to plant the outer on.

Hmm wonder if I've screwed up somewhere then. Don't recall seeing a step on the inner (they're genuine ones). I'll check tomorrow.

Found a picture of the inners. No step on them that I can see? Wonder if the pressing changed or am I missing something.

Perhaps we're not talking about the same thing, I can't mark a pic on my phone...

I thought you were referring to this area, suggesting the inner sill should have a step there to bring it out to the same level as the middle? As it currently stands if I were to attach the outer sill they'd be a gap at this end of the sill between the two.

Yep that's it. My memory is what I said before.

Yeah in Fletch's book his inner looks to have a step but mine doesn't (gen ones as well arg). I'm down working on the van today and have just cut a bit of sheet metal to bring it all to the same height. That'll do I reckon.

Welded in the B pillar repairs today.
And checked against the outer B pillar. I’ll get that welded in tomorrow.

Made a filler piece to raise the inner sill to the same level as the middle sill. Once I finish the B and C pillars I should be able to get the side panel fitted.

I finished the outer B pillar repair today.

Repair piece trimmed down and holes punched for when I fit the middle panel:

    Clamped in place:

All welded in and welds ground flush:

And finished with a light coat of etch primer. I’m really happy with this repair.

Next up the C pillar, thus far I’ve cut back to fresh metal and started fabbing repair pieces.
