Most of those samba guys think increasing the CR above 7.3:1 is risky, they’d have a fit even thinking about a blower.
Certainly that used to be the case but it's swung in the past few years towards "How high can I get it". Then it gets funny as only about 1 in 20 posters seems to realise that static and running CR are 2 different things and the guys bragging 10:1 often don't seem to realise that actually they're just at the same running CR as a stock cam... or maybe even lower.
See i disagree the low down torque and the fact you don`t need high revs for turbo was my thinking for a bus .. the little AMR500 chargers that you can buy in kit form are too small and will run hot especially as they run them with a smaller pully to run faster . Mercedes and mini used the Eaton M45 on their cars with great success ... I'm only running 7.5psi ,i think heat becomes an issue over 10psi but I'm already running a air/water charge cooler ... like you i love the 1700 type 4 engine as it just wants to rev plus they are relatively plentiful . This is just a fun car project that i have enjoyed and learnt so much especially the tuning side which always scared me , writing a map from scratch is a big learning curve working out timing/fuel etc .... only thing it doesn't have is a knock sensor which I'm still in two minds over .
I’ve always thought those breather boxes were just shiny tat sold by the vw companies as my bus is stock 1.7 type 4 al bar twin dells . The breather tubes in the heads have those little caps etc .. the last blast in the 14 I had oil puke out of the head breathers .. so as Im using a top fill oil filler with a pipe to filter with the fancy valve type cap I decided to enlarge it and add the CH breather tubes in as well . New verses old . Still need to add the spigots Cap has a small vent and a fancy way that prevent oil getting to the air filter
