Bus driven on to Halfords ramps where it stays as the driveway slope is too steep for axle stands at a height.
    Remove thermostat
    Remove carburettor and air box
Halfords 4x4 Jack with 13mm plywood pad on cup as its too small under engine.
Use jack to Lower engine after removing wires cables pipes.
Remove fanhousing and alternator while its still under the car. (going for oil cooler and inlet manifold bolts)

Work on engine under rear of car leaning over it into the car through the engine hatch.

As the bus is lowered 10cm and has a towbar fitment across the rear, I would have to take off the rear bumper to get the engine out any further. It would probably come out with the fanhousing if I took off the exhaust pipe.

I should have removed the exhaust pipe as it fouls the bumper as I try to put the engine back.

  6. Hi

I know this is an old post, but how do you get to the 4 engine bolts?
Ive removed the engine in a bug a few times, but never a van.
Bug is easy cost you can take the lid off, and get very easy access to the top two bolts through the top of the engine.

But you cant do that on a van! :-

    Tips?

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Reach round the back of the fan housing for the starter one. The other top one is a bolt through the gearbox so undo from underneath.

  8. Top tip for doing the top right bolt on a bus... use a ratchet spanner... makes life a whole lot easier

I managed to get mine out by using ramps and before I started I disconnected the thermostat and tjen I could remove the fan shroud to let the enginr slide undet the tow bar.

Getting it out balanced on a Halfords 4x4 jack was easy. Putting it back was harder as the EMPI exhaust caught on the tow bar.
Oh god why post wit a bottle of wine in me. Its fre
    zing by the bbq.

Quite funny yesterday at T2D boot camp when they took the engine out of a splittie and nobody believed they hadnt prepared it first. And then we were shocked by the silver tape over the tin snipped tinware.
