1600cc Engine removal from a late bay

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by 73johnathan, Dec 22, 2011.

1. Does anyone have any advice / decent links? Or instructions?

2. I got a used motorbike style jack off fleabay quite cheap, made for a nice stable jack to lower the engine out, work on it & put it back in, I got a helper as it was my first time, but I'd probably be able to do it on my own with this.

This is what I but depending on what tools and lifting equipment you have available you may have to do it differently.
[li]Disconnect battery.[/li][li]Remove the foam seal.[/li][li]Label up all the wires and hoses so you know where they go - take a few pics too.[/li][li]Disconnect the wires and hoses, tuck them out the way.[/li][li]Clamp the fuel line, disconnect and remove from engine bay.[/li][li]Loosen the accelerater cable.[/li][li]Undo the heater control cables from the heat exchangers and disconnect the ducts.[/li][li]Jack up the van as high as possible, and make safe on blocks or axle stands (chock the front wheels).[/li][li]Use a trolley jack to take the weight of the engine and undo the 4 engine bolts.[/li][li]Undo the 4 bolts of the engine crossbrace.[/li][li]Wiggle the engine side to side and it should come away from the bell housing.[/li][li]When free, pull the accelerater cable through from the back and tuck it away.[/li][li]Make sure all wires and hoses are clear and lower the engine (it can be good to have a friend on hand to help guide the engine from the bay.[/li][li]Depending on the height of your van you may need to drop the engine off the jack. If it's high enough then pull it out on the jack. If not then 'walk' it onto a piece of hardboard or carpet and drag it out.[/li]
Et voila!

8. This post was perfect timing. I was planning at getting the engine out over christmas.

My biggest problem is finding somewhere to do it. My drive in on a slope!!

9. a set of ramps on the down hill end and your bus will be level and the engine will fit under the rear valance

10. I ended up taking off the clutch cable via the wing nut as it gave me a bit more room to get at one of the engine nuts with a socket on an extension, maybe just me but I just couldn't get any purchase or movement without this bit of clearance

11. ...and I got the halfords 4x4 car / van high lift jack which gave loads of clearance with the van jacked up to slide the engine away, this jack regularly comes up on halfords half price offers, so buy at the right time

13. why are you lot jacking your vans up...
drop the engine on two skate boards you can move it easy then ;)

16. What's the minimum height to lift the van to remove the engine? Having our first attempt after boxing day.

19. I can do mine on my own with a jack and a car creeper .
Jack the van up high then put it on stands , take off everything from the engine then put the jack under the engine and pull it out once out I lower it onto a board under the engine bay then pull it from there on to a car creeper then move we're I want .
I've had no choice but to do this on my own but at least I don't get in my own way :)
