1600cc Engine removal from a late bay

  1.
  2. Do I need to chain up the gearbox? Does anyone have any pictures of how to do it?

  3. If you have the engine end of the gearbox bell housing supported from an overhead frame section with resilient mounts, usual for a late bay, then there is no further requirement to support it when the engine is removed.

  4. ^ what fritt says. If you've got a "hanger" subframe above the gearbox, you don't need to support it.

You don't need great jacking clearance all the time. Support the engine on a jack, pull it out to disengage, then (with a struggle) you can lower it to the ground. You then only need to jack the bus up a bit to pull it out.

  5. Woohooo we got the engine out today for the first time, took a bit longer than expected.

The pink thing it is on is a pink creeper trolley - not mine either!! Graham got it for christmas 2 years ago :)

No nasties have been found so far but we've found where we had an air leak so all is good :)

Neighbours had a good laugh at me in my overalls and furry hat :)) too

  6. not that hard is it ;)
how long did it take ?

  8. Woo hoo! Well done guys. 8)

  9. its no harder to get back in and it ll be even easier now you've got a big jack
just don't forget to thread your accelerator cable back though only a idiot would forget about that :dizzy:

  10. Now you've got the engine out of the way would be a good time to remove that firewall and check the plumbing around the tank.. breather pipes and the tank filler pipe.

  12. Just in case you weren't already aware. There are the visible screwheads on the face of it but just for fun VW put in 2 or 4 screws that come up from underneath. Their access is up through the frame that amongst other things retains the bottom edge of the firewall. You may be lucky and find that the screws haven't rusted in.

  13. Thanks for that. I'm sure I would of got confused by that!!!

  14. Figure that VW thought that the vehicle would be razor blades long before that panel needed to be removed. Drove me up the wall when I first came to remove one...easy once you know the little ****are lurking there. They go through into the flat section of the wall ...the two 100mm level bits at either end

  15. Got the engine out and removed the fuel tank but now need to replace the fuel tank retaining straps, any ideas on how to do this? Can you buy replacements anywhere?

  16. I haven't come across new replacement straps. One of mine had rusted through so made up a new one out of a srip of 0.75mm steel. The fixed end being welded to the stub of the old one likewise the free end shaped to take the screw.

  17. I cut one of my straps so I had to make my own , just welded a strip if metal on then made my own bolt holder bits that bolt the straps down .
Or find some of another bus
