That makes sense! Beforehand the heating hose was missing so the fan was blowing air all around, after we put the heat exchanger hoses on this stopped, hence the temp rose! We mentioned the less than perfect pushrod tube but as it's the one that doesn't leak we decided there were more important things to be getting on with.
Nice - Ive no idea how it works. Are they difficult to fit? Is that better than the Sump and dipstick sensors?
Don't be sorry, the level of help from the guys on here is excellent. I'm so glad we've started improving your Bus, you're close to getting the "go" sorted. The "stop" already works well as does the "steering" and it looks well tidy. You're on your way to a nice Bus.
Flaps in the fan housing, if you have them. They should be controlled by the missing thermostat. Look at some diagrams, then reach around the right side of the fan housing and feel for the linkage.
There is a set of thermostatically-controlled flaps inside the fan housing, one set on either side. These help your engine warm up more quickly. If the flaps are shut for some reason in normal operation, they'll block cooling air to the heads and the engine will get hot. Take a look at either side of fan housing, at the bottom where it meets the cylinder tin. If you can see two small bolts or screws on either side, flaps are fitted. Or reach around the back and feel for the mechanism, as Zed suggests. If you're missing the oil cooler tin, that'll explain the hotness with the air hoses fitted: the back pressure from the heat exchangers will likely cause more (extremely hot) air to be vented through the cooler. Your engine will get fixed eventually, but I'd avoid driving it so that the oil bubbles - that really will knacker it ...

I've really enjoyed reading this thread. Not because of Burnzdog's woes, but for the way the TLB community have all chipped in to help, the fact that I actually understood a good portion of it, and finally for TBR's kind support to a stranger. Well done.
Thanks snotty, judging by this picture I took last night would suggest that the tin doesn't have the flaps fitted, annoyingly. Can the engine efficiently cool without these?
