Avoid a fire, everyone should read this

  1. Thanks Chrisradioman,
Great timing, my engine's out at the moment, they've turned to dust when I touched them...even the ones on top of the tank split when I yanked them.
    Cheers

  2. Glad it helped you :)

  3. That looks fine to me dude... tank breathers will be next on the list!!

  4. That the ones behind the firewall?

  5. I've had a slight fuel smell in the engine bay for months and used this handy thread to install the breathers to one of the pancake filters (which had been just hanging about above the engine!). There was still a smell after I replaced all the rubber joints etc, and I eventually found a small weep of fuel on the throttle arm of the RH carb. I took the carb off and after taking it apart and checking the float etc I found that the fuel cut-off solenoid was loose. This is apparently not unheard of so hopefully this will solve the mystery. I'll reassemble today and keep fingers crossed!

  6. Hmmm - No! Still leaking. I'm going to replace the needle valve next as the float seems to be floating. From what I've read, re-bushing the throttle shaft isn't easy - is this true please?

  7. Hello all. I replaced my breather hoses with apparently good 3mm dia ones from Machine 7 in August (although could have been VW Heritage, I forget). The one between the t-piece and the oil bath air cleaner has gone all white and furry like an old tomato since I laid up the van under a cover a month ago

I just brushed the furry mould stuff off and the hose looks fine. I mean, it's brand new. Just a bit weird?

Another breather hose had a couple of patches of mould which again, I just brushed off.

  8. You didn't happen to be eating a mince pie coated in icing sugar when you fitted it did you?
Bit like the guy who goes to the doctors and says his willys turned orange and the doctors says what job do you do and he says he doesn't work but just sits around watching porn and eating watsits all day :)

  9. Hey, nothing wrong with wotsits. I get orange fingers when I polish mine.....

  10. No, it's really strange... Was fitted in the summer so no mince pies. It's just gone mouldy since I covered the van up.

  11. Glad I read this post today. Checked the red pipe and it fell apart. I have been chasing this leak for months!

  12. Our van had a new fuel tank and filler pipe in September as the original tank leaked. Unfortunately, when more than half full, petrol fumes are very strong.

Therefore I ordered a new TEE piece without looking at the existing situation.

Having glanced at the engine, I find there is no TEE and no pipe to the air filter.

What material should this pipe be made of and how exactly is it connected to the "pancake" filter? I read above about a tapped connection - I have taps and dies - some detailed guidance would be much appreciated.

I see VW Aircooled Works supplies a kit. Is the pipe in the kit cut up to make the new connections throughout the system?

    Many thanks.

  13. Hi,

I have not long had my camper and with a strong smell of petrol have read this thread,
now in the above diagram i can see that parts 9 27 and 28 are missing from my system, where do they connect to and can you still get them?
    Any help is much appreciated
    Thanks Matt

9 is just a piece of hose and 27 / 28 are how it connects to your air filter.
If you've got the standard air box, you've likely got the connector so just add the hose from the "T" piece.
If you've got a pancake filter just tap it to the filter housing.

It's only vapour so most just use a piece of fuel line.
Just drill a hole, fit a connector (so that it can't be ingested by the carb) and push the hose on.

  16. Thanks all for the info, will steer clear of Oxford for now ;)

  17. Thanks for advice guys. It turns out the local garage has done this job on a Bay before so it has gone there.

  18. Hi folks ive read this thread but I cant see any mention of single cabs or crew cabs. Ive just bought a 79 Crew Cab.
Ive already solved the non working fuel sender so panels are off in the back to get to the tank.
Is there a different set up for crew cabs and single cabs?
